PC freezes

:cool:Hi Guys and Gals. I'm new to this forum and I'll tell you I am very impressed with it. Lots of good info to help with problems.

My problem is my new HP Pavilian Elite m9350f is it will just freeze once a day. I've been on support several times and they say it is in good shape and the processor just might be getting to hot and it shuts down before damage will occur. I never had this problem when a fan is running in my room. However being in Michigan I don't have the fan on now with the cold weather. I paid alot for the tower and don't want to ruin it buy holding the windows key down and holding the power switch down on the tower. Will doing this alot fry my PC? I wait a minute before re-starting it so the hard drive stops.

thank you

Hang on.... you say it freezes?
Usually when there's a problem with an overheating CPU the computer just shuts down, instead of freezing. So please clarify what you mean. I understand freezing as you screen freezing, your mouse stops working, your windows key stops working, any media that you were playing stops working, but you still do have an image on the screen.
If that's not what you mean, and if instead the computer shuts down, or you get a blue screen, then our troubleshooting advice becomes different.

If it's the latter, then yes, the CPU might very well be the problem. (you might need a better heatsink and fan)
If it's the first, there might be a whole host of things which are wrong, from hardware to software.

However...if your computer is still new, and still under warranty.... I do recommend you just take it back to the store and demand they swap it around for another one. That would be the easiest way out. I do understand that you don't want to do that though.

Hi SIR VORTEX USA, welcome to the board,

The problem seems to be possibly either GPU overheat, HDD is going out and/or bad connections on SATA cable.

However, regardless, I would return the unit or exchange for another one.

I just can't believe HP support told you "it is in good shape and the processor just might be getting too hot".

The sole reason, most time, buying a pre built computer from a big company is to avoid to have this sort of problems, no matter how small it is.

Hope everything works out smoothly for you.

The unit freezes in it's tracks but only freezes when I'm gaming on Call of Duty World at War and Microsoft flight simulator both high demanding games. When I say freezes the PC just stops and you see what ever it stoped at with no mouse control or ctr/alt/delite won't work. HP support has been fantastic for the most part as they take over your PC and trouble shoot it. I've ran all diagnostics and everything passes. Like I said I had a house fan running all the time in the back ground during summer and this problem seems to have started since I stopped using the fan. The unit was purchased in Aug. so can't return it to Best Buy.
I also wonder if the fans need cleaning inside the tower. I guess I'll just check, doesn't seem to old yet to do that but what the heck check right? dah The tec. @ HP seems to think it's just getting to hot, I say that's strange because it only happens once a day on those games. Otherwise it screams power and works fantastic.
OK and thanks for the help. I still want to know as I power the freeze off by holding the windows key down on keyboard and holding power switch down till it shuts off am I doing damage to the PC? I wait a minute so the hard drive stops spinning to turn the power back on.

thanks

First, regular cleaning of ALL fans inside your case are a good idea. Use cans of compressed air though....blowing the air is a better idea than using a vacuum cleaner (less chance of damaging parts, less chance of creating static electricity).

As for your freezing problem.... to be honest, if it simply freezes, I personally do not think it is an overheating problem of the CPU. Usually when the CPU overheates, the computer will simply shut down. It might be a good idea to find yourself some temperature monotoring program to figure out the temps of your cpu and other components in the computer.

What I think might be the problem would be more the graphics card. And indeed, I think it might be overheating. It might not be though. I recommend first to find out the temps on your graphics card when you use your computer normally. I have a passively cooled graphics card myself, so my graphics card temperatures are on the high side. With normal use (and I'm reading the temp now while watching media on part of the screen, playing a game of Civ4 colonization on another part of the screen) my graphics card temp is 60 celcius (140 fahrenheit). Your graphics card really should not be any hotter than that while your computer is idle.
If it is, you should FIRST clean the fan on the graphics card.
Second, you might want to think about purchasing a replacement fan for the graphicscard. Also, prebuilt systems are known for not having too many case fans inside them....you might want to invest a few buck there. Getting a good airflow in your case can really help you out here...some well placed case fans do your system a lot of good (I overdid it, probably...I have about 8)

Also, what I would do straight away is make sure you have the latest drivers for EVERYTHING. Because all of your problems might be caused by a simple driver conflict.
Yes, it might be that simple. It may even be as simple as an ethernet card you put in which has crappy drivers. So please search online for the latest drivers for all of your hardware. You can also do a search on google for any peripherals you may have such as printers and webcams to see if there are any known issues with their drivers and your make of computer.

The reason I think it's the graphics card, by the way, is because you say this happens most while you play demanding games. The bottleneck is usually the graphics card....it gets terribly hot during games such as the ones you mention.

As for cleaning the computer...I may be neurotic, but I clean out the computer once every month.... then again, I live in a very dusty old house (I live in a city which was mostly built around the 16th century, so we have old dusty houses....gorgeous though, but dusty) and I have cats..... AND I've had a powersupply blow up on me once because of dust build up. Cleaning is a GOOD thing and it is never too early to start!

As for damaging the PC..... No, I do not think you will damage the PC that way, even though doing what you descibe will give it a slight jolt. However, the only thing which really gets the jolt is the power supply. Remember, what you describe doing is the same thing which happens with normal turning on/off..... And machines are built for that kind of thing. If it does damage the computer, it will only be shortening its lifespan somewhat. However, it will still be our goal at the forum to help you solve the problem completely......

By the way.....doesn't your computer have a simple reset button you can try? And simply holding the power button should do the trick too, right? I never need to hold the windows key at the same time (and what's the use, as the keyboard has frozen up.....)

Day 24, Thank You for the information. I was told to hold the windows key down but what you said makes since. Not sure on reset button. I only see one button on top of tower.
When I clean the fan blades I go one step further besides the air can. I use Q-tips just very slightly dampened I mean very, than I clean each blade (both sides) with it and always use a clean part of the tip to gather the residue off the blade. Might seem overkill and time wise who cares I got time. This will make sure it is truely clean. I don't get fuzz on anything. I use my fingers to squeeze any moisture out of each Q-tip and use a paper towel to insure no water gets into what we don't want water to get into. I might use 15 tips but I know it's clean.
I will very soon go get another fan for the inside of the unit. It has 3.

Thank You but my unit is 64bit, I have the latest GeForce driver. I have the specs filled out.

Sir Vortex, before you buy a new fan for the graphics card, make sure of a few things. First check your temps to see if they are indeed too high. Then very carefully start up your machine with the case open, to see if the current fan actually spins (if you've cleaned it before, and it gets dirty, then it probably does, but it doesn't hurt to check). No use replacing the fan if the temps are low enough. And you WILL need to replace the fan if the temps really are too high. Though, having said that, ensuring correct airflow in your system (cable management is a good idea) does wonders also.

You have the latest graphics drivers, but do you also have the latest drivers for all your other hardware, such as motherboard, ethernet card (or integrated), printers, sound, etc? Please check, cos a driver issue is very hard to spot sometimes, but can cause a lot of grief.

I just checked your specs.... and I have to say... that PSU of yours has me worried. Now, don't get me wrong...it SHOULD be enough, 500 watts, but if I were you, I'd check on the unit itself to see what you actually have. Also, check on your graphics card whether it has and/or needs an external power cord attached to it. Sometimes systembuilders forget to connect the little cord from the power supply to the graphics card... The heavier graphics cards can't draw enough power from the PCIe slot to work correctly.... If they don't get enough power, they tend to either freeze, or reboot your system.... so that's a real option in your case....

we're here to help, man, don't worry about it! Though, having said that, if you appreciate someone's help in general, please click those scales next to the post on the top right to add to that person's reputation.

But hey man, we're not finished here....your computer is still freezing up, the problem is not solved yet!

I'm getting really curious though, whether we can actually narrow down the cause of your problem....so please post the temps and stuff....

Clicked it and thanks for telling me that option. I still don't understand how I can tell the temperature inside the unit. Is there something to download? I know when I feel behind the unit where the fan is it feels very warm.

HP tec changed my virtual memory settings and that has seemed to help. On Call of Duty World at War game yesterday it didn't freeze. I have my own server on it called SIR FALCON USA I'm not a good player per say but try hard and I'm learning.

Hi, SIR VORTEX USA

First sorry about the 32/64 bit confusion :o must read my own posts before I click submit

If you download CPU-z and GPU-z they will read the sensors that are installed in the motherboard / graphics card and should help to diagnose any temperature problems

Download locations are in my previous post :)

Hi SIR VIRTEX USA, great job on your cleaning!

Just in case the brilliant suggestions from the other post did help. Try to blew a house fan directly into the open case to see if it still freeze. If it works, that means you might need to add a fan in the case. HP case usually has only one fan plus one in the power supply.

Speaking of power supply, factory PSU are usually in low quality which leads to unstable voltage. I would suggest to replace it with a reputable brand. May step up to 600W.

Another thing, update your driver to 180.60 as suggested, it will help the GPU work easier which means cooler. It improves the quality in playing FarCry2 and Crysis for me.

bruce2 thank you for the help. That update driver would be for the video card right? I seem to have the latest driver for that. But will double check. It is strange how this problem just started happening since I don't have the fan going in the room seeing it's cold here in Michigan. I will just add another fan to the tower with help from the geek squad at Best Buy. What is even stranger is how it only freeze's once. Man this is driving me nutz...lol Unit's still under warranty and I'll purchase a extended 2 year soon. It comes with in home tec support which is a plus and replacement parts. Worth it in my world.

Sir Vortex. Scanning these post I noticed you have a 9800GT Video card.

So do I.

The fans run slow! Download Riva Tuner here RivaTuner

This tool is free and does many things, but the only thing I use it for is to crank up my 9800s GPU fan. My 9800 ideled at 58C. The normal cut off point(max temp) is 75C~85C. If your running a graphic intinsive game, you'll get there fast.

Result would be a freeze!

Use riva tuner to up the speed of your GPU fan and just maybe, you will solve your problem.

Good luck.

bruce2 thank you for the help.

SIR VORTEX USA

You are welcome, Sir VORTEX USA.

Yes, the driver is for the graphic card. About the warranty, it really depends what it costs. You may survey the forum to see how many people has extended warranty on there computer. Now date electronics are seldom break down. Most problem can be solved with help from here. In two years, you are very likely replace it with another or you probably build your own supper gaming machine if you hang around computer forums long enough. Lol

Have a good holiday.

Hi SIR VORTEX USA, and welcome to the Vista forums

The latest issue graphics drivers for your card (if I've read the spec of the unit correctly :D) is available here ...

Download NVIDIA GeForce ForceWare Driver 180.60 Beta Vista 32-bit Driver for Windows Vista - Softpedia

You may also want to check out gpu-z ...

GPU-Z Video card GPU Information Utility

and CPU-z available here ...

CPUID

to actually check temperatures in the system

I'm looking at those downloads and have no idea how to use them. I'm not sure about downloading something I don't understand. All I need is something to tell me how hot my unit gets.

If someone could explain to me how to use this I would apprieciate it.

TY

SirVortex

Click this:

techPowerUp! :: Download TechPowerUp GPU-Z v0.2.8

and then click "download now" on the right side. Select one of the mirrors in the list (the one in the USA is a good one for you). It should then start to download. Once it has downloaded, doubleclick the downloaded file, and allow it to be executed (you will get a UAC warning from Vista). It will then immediately start to run. It will first do an update search, which you can then close after it has finished.
The main windows you then see will not give you the info you want. At the top there are tabs, graphics card is the first, sensors is the second, validation is the third. You want to click on the second tab. There's three values in there for me, the GPU core clock, the memory clock and last, the GPU temperature.

While letting this program run in the background, then start up a game, and play it for about 10 minutes. Then ALT-Tab back to this program, and check what it says. One thing you should do before starting the game is making sure that the little box next to "continue refreshing this screen while GPU-Z is in the background" is ticked!!!!

that should tell you the temperature of your graphics card!

Ok, I have another option which tells you the temperatures of both the GPU and the CPU in one go. It is called speedfan. Now remember that any monotoring program can be a few degrees off, but it should give you a rough idea.
Also, speedfan allows you to actually manually control the speed of the fans in your system (if the program recognises the fans)
speedfan download
Just download, install and then run
The main window will give you all kinds of temperatures in the right hand window. GPU first, then overall system, then the CPU temperature. It even gives me the temperatures for each of my hard drives.....

LOL.... well, don't forget, they have to put a disclaimer there.... they don't want anyone sueing them.
I have speedfan running now. Have had it running for a few hours (didn't want to recommend it without trying it out first) and have had no problems. And you can simply uninstall it after you have used it for what you need it.
Once you've figured out what you need to know, you can get rid of it...... (or, go create a restore point before you install it, just to be sure)
