Is there a plugin or software that will compress the audio on my pc? For example , I would like to compress streamed programs while I'm listening. The commercials really blast sometimes.

Something that's live or realtime will probably have to be your sound card/driver, or something professional. Lots of players have compression (DRC), but I don't believe any do it realtime. I did find some professional software though that seems promising enough.

i have a plugin for firefox that downloads and automatically compresses streaming video (you tube etc) i bet they do one for sound too , have a trawl through their plugins site
