Patch Tuesday heads-up: 8 bulletins, 5 critical

Microsoft plans to ship 8 security bulletins next Tuesday (April 14, 2009) to fix remote code execution and denial of service vulnerabilities affecting Windows, Office and Internet Explorer.

According to the company’s Patch Tuesday advance notice, five of the bulletins will be rated “critical,” meaning they can be exploited by hackers to take complete control of Windows machines.

Strange - Windows Update only delivered me 3 updates, all of which were associated with Office XP or Office 2007 viewer software.

Wonder if this is because I am running the Vista SP2 RC?

(Edit: It looks like Vista SP2 IS the reason I didn't get the updates - it isn't affected by the vulnerabilities. BTW Kevin Turner reckons Vista SP2 is the 'most secure OS on the planet'.......)

I got 9 updates which included some for Office 2007 and the Malicious Software Remover and the Junk Mail Filter, my XP machine got 10.

I did notice one thing though, I have NOD32 version 4 and it's tray icon was showing amber, when I checked it was telling me that my system wasn't up to date, of course as soon as the monthly updates were installed the icon went back to green ;)

I quite liked that so I know now that if that icon changes colour investigate, another safeguard. :D
