Oversize recommand mode error 1280x1024

I am running an asus 5290 with Intel I7 quad core. NVIDIA GeForce GTX260 9gb of ram and windows vista x64bit.

Machine had been without issue, then one day the monitor will not display after windows start up. The monitor comes back with "oversize recommand mode 1280 x 1024.

This seems to be a problem for a lot of folks. So, I went into safe mode and removed the nvidia driver. i rebooted my machine and the screen comes up in vga mode, however, windows automatically re-installs the nvidia drivers, reboots and I have the same issue again.

I go back into safe mode, remove the driver and install an updated driver version of NVIDIA, reboot the machine and once again, I get the oversize recommand issue again.

It seems like this is a vicious cycle. Anyone have any suggestions? Please? Arrrgh!

I would really appreciate input on this matter? Restore point won't work and I'm going to have to reinstall if I get any suggestions......! I cannot modify the display mode in safe mode....
