Outlook spell check

Hi,

I'm trying to figure out how to get spell check to recognize "wan" and "meting" as misspelled words. I usually mispell the words "want" and "meeting" in the above manner, but spell check regonizes them as words. I want spell check to put the red squiggly line under "wan" and "meting" so that I can correct them accordingly.

I've tried looking for the dictionary in the regular paths of:

c:/users/<user>/applic data/roaming/microsoft/proof (and Uproof)
c:/docs & settings/user/application data/microsoft/proof

but it only has the CUSTOM or exclusion dictionary in these locations. I have the folders un-hidden so that I can see/find the above paths.

Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you,

I assume you are using Word as for spellchecking in Outlook. If so, the following article shows you how to exclude correctly spelled words from the MAIN Dictionary (as opposed to just the custom one): How to remove a word from Word's main Spelling Dictionary.

I hope this helps.

Good luck!

Lorien,

Thank you for your reply.

I added these words to the exclusion dictionary, but the words do not get identified as mispelled. Instead, when I run the spell check, a window pops up at the end saying that some words have been excluded from the spell check.

Is there anyway I can get these words to be recognized as misspelled and to be given the option to choose the correct spelling?

Thanks,

Sorry, I thought that would work but apparently all it does is make the problem worse by adding that message at the end which I assume did not specify the excluded words. Everything I've read says that process works to do what you wanted - I don't understand why it's acting this way on your system.

I'm now looking to see if there is a way to access and modify the main dictionary database to remove specific words from it - then if spelled that way they will appear as errors since they aren't in the dictionary - but I haven't found a way to gain access to modify it yet (if they allow us to do that and/or if we have the proper tools to do so). I haven't quite given up yet, but it appears that what you want isn't possible (even though I think it should be - but they probably think allowing users access to that database would cause more problems than it solves which is why they created the custom dictionary to add new words rather than just let us modify the main database itself).

I will say that I don't hold out much hope on being able to resolve this problem as I don't think I'll be able to get past the permission and access rights of the database file (assuming I even have the tools to do it - and that you have those same tools).

I'll let you know if I make any progress (or if I give up all hope) - in the meantime, think of it as something you just need to live with as that's how spellcheckers seem to work and what you want to do just isn't built into the program. Or perhaps you can double-check that you did everything right when you setup the exclusion dictionary.

Good luck!

BTW, what version of Outlook are you using and do you have it configured to use Word for doing the Spellchecks and, if so, what version of Word are you using?

You have to restart Word (possibly even Windows) for the exclusion
dictionary to be loaded and take effect. And you must certainly use the
appropriate file/location for your version of Word. But it should work if you did it properly and used the correct file. I've confirmed this with the person who wrote that article! I've also confirmed this with another MS Word MVP who says he just tested the procedure and it worked as you want it to work.

So please give it another try and triple-check the file you're using and then reboot and see if it works this time. And make sure Word is set as the default spell checker as noted above.

I hope this helps.

Good luck!

Lorien,

Thank you for all your assistance. I triple checked my exclusion dictionary and all seems set up properly. I believe my issue may be that we have Outlook 2007 but Word 2003. Why, I don't know...to make things difficult?

I will just take care to re-read my emails if I get the above mentioned pop-up window after spell check.

Jacee - also thank you for the alternative spell check option. I will keep that in mind in case we want something different in the future because it does seem to have lots of good features.

Thank you again for all your help!

I have no solution to your question.
For your information only : there is such a word as WAN in dictionary, which is why Spell Check recognizes it as a correct word.

Wan : (pr. wonn) adj. pallid, especially from illness or exhaustion......

Edit :
I can't explain " meting ", except MET is considered as a word.
