outlook email

If its your new Computer, you wont have outlook pre-installed on your pc. This is because they are giving Windows Mail.
p.s: You can get outlook by purchasing MS Office Home and Student 2007. ;)

my new laptop came with vista, but i asked my geek to install my old office 2003 complete with all my outlook data. it works fine, but no vista help, manuals etc mention it, assuming i changed to the new windows mail or whatever. outlook now includes loads of extra fancy features, but with no explanations. i want to transfer some of my emails into word files in my documents but you lose the to-from-date bit unless you email them to yourself before copy+paste. does vista hold a solution to this ;ongstanding problem?

Dinesh, FYI
MS Office Home & Student 2007 is made up of Word, Excel, Power Point & One Note.
Office Outlook 2007 has to be purchased seperately.

thanks, but Outlook 2003 is now on my new laptop. It contains all my old and new emails, calendar and contacts data, as .pst files (hidden, I can no longer back them up regularly).

I notice that Vista has a contacts folder which has useful features such as being able to link people with their organisations and their actual emails. Can I transfer my Outlook contacts into this new contacts folder without retyping every detail? Being a proper folder rather than part of an elusive .pst I could presumably back it up and carry it round on a stick!

Now can I do the same with my calendar and emails?

Are you referring to Windows Mail above?

Thanks.

No. My first concern was with the contacts, in a pre-provided folder to which I thought I would transfer all my contacts since it seemed to offer opportunities to link people with a record of their emails (why wouldn't one want this?) and in a way they could easily be backed up and accessed offline.

Yes, I might have then moved my emailing from Outlook to Windows Mail

BUT closer investigation of the Contacts help revealed that when using the group email function you can't hide email addresses! I always use BCC - don't want them all spamming each other and blaming me. And the contact record forms have multiple boxes but not "category".

SO I guess I'll stay with Outlook and launch once again into working out how to make it regularly back itself up. With my last computer this took two years to get right, then the habit disappeared with the new laptop.

I hate the way the .pst files are separated from what used to be called "my computer" on the hard disk. I have parallel sets of folders which I can't even run side by side for ease of copying and pasting to word files. The only way of including the date etc is to forward each message to oneself and end up with many duplicates.

I have used computers alone at home for 27 years with no help from colleagues. At least when I first got Windows and struggled until 4am (UK time) to close down, I was able to phone microsoft in Seattle who said "click Start" (start???)

Ditto here. Most important IMHO.

Re click start to stop / close down. Yep, one of their better, well thought through design decisions. [I don't think.]
Good luck.
