Out of Memory

I have Vista Enterprise with 2gb of memory.
everytime i try to access a folder on my external hard drive (Toshiba 2.0 USB), it freezes explorer and and error message comes up saying out of memory, but i can't read it all because most of the window is just black.

also, before all of this started my NVidia graphics had a message pop up saying the NVIDIA Display Panel Extension cannot be created.
Possible reasons include:
version mismatch. Reinstalling display drivers may solve this problem.

i've tried to download drivers but the only place to find them are on lenovo support and they didnt help

When I downloaded the driver setup it said there were no drivers that were compatible with my system

also, my system has 2.00gb of RAM but in the system properties for virtual memory, it says i have 3.00gb and currently allocated 2313mb

i dont know if that has anything to do with it, but maybe the system is trying to use more RAM than what is available.

i'm downloading the driver, but the error only comes up when i access folders on my external hard drive.
my computer seems fine now with the hard drive plugged in, but as soon as i open a folder on it, it will start messing up

okay, so i installed the driver for 32-bit and when i restarted my computer, it stopped booting up before the windows vista logo screen appeared before you try to log in.
so i turned it off, and unplugged my external hard drive and it booted up fine. but now i dont know what to do about my hard drive

My Computer

Have you tired to install this driver in the safe mode?

On the out of memory issue, is your hard drive full? Is your Swap file set to 4 gigs or greater or system managed?

my hard drive is not full, and i dont know about the swap file. how do you set it? and should it be on 4 gigs, because i only have 2 gigs of RAM

My Computer

i just tried to open a file on my external hard drive, and the RAM meter in my sidebar that shows the CPU and RAM usage, went to 100% and ended up restarting explorer

Your virtual memory setting are probibly ok, if you haven't touched them. However, Open the control panel -> go to system -> then advanced tab -> Performance settings button -> Advanced tab ->virtual memory -> change. If it is set to system managed you are good.

You might want to check your disk for errors using chkdsk.

Do you have another USB drive avaiable to try? Or another USB port on the machine. Maybe the drive or port is bad.
