"Open" dissapeared from start menu

Hey everyone!

I've gotten myself into a bit of a stupid situation, and I'd be really grateful for anyone's help.

Well I was in the registry editor trying to clean up my context menu a little, and as a result I nolonger have "open" in the context menu for audio and video files only. This means double clicking doesn't open the file. I can however go to "open with" and open it that way.

Does anyone have any ideas of how to restore this?

Thanks for your reply. I completely forgot about system restore. Anyway I tried the earliest restore point but it seems I was messing with the registry before then, so I'm still stuck with the same problem.

Any more ideas?

I suppose undoing the changes doesn't come into the question

Back up your files and complete restore/New install unless anyone has better Ideas

First things first. Put things in default settings...start with Folder option. Then right click taskbar , Properties, and go to Start Menus tab, Customize, then hit Use Default Setting. Still, make sure Connect to is checked.

Stay away from the registry. Only Shawn and Company are allowed there.

I agree with CNY. If you are new to a computer or messing with the registry then I would be VERY cautious as to what you are doing. If you mess up the registry you will be in a lot of trouble. All sorts of problems will happen. I suggest reading a lot of Brinks Tutorials to get a better idea as to whatever tweaks you want to accomplish. If you want to clean up some junk, then a lot of members use CCleaner to do a little cleanup but like pooch and CNY said, make backups first.

You might want to run SFC to see if it can restore any missing/corrupt files that may have gotten messed up.

Hi,
thanks a lot for everyones' help, it's much appreciated. Unfortunatly none of it has worked :-(

I've discovered a work around which seems to be ok, I can choose my audio and video files to open with real player instead, that way it seems to be able to open like normal. It sounds like it's just a problem with WMP, but for some reason WMP isn't on my programs list so I can't uninstall or do a repair, and when i redownload WMP it tells me the version ive downloaded is older than my current version so it won't install! AAHHH!

Oh well. Lesson learnt.
