Old Computer

Ok, so this maybe isn't about Windows Vista, but could you help me anyway?

I have quite an old Dell Dimension 4550, around 7 years old and it only has 256mb of memory. I was wondering what would be the best antivirus for it that wouldn't take up too much memory.
I am planning on upgrade the memory and the hard drive after christmas and then hopefully upgrading it to vista so this antivirus software will only be a temporary fix.

Thanks very much and have a very Merry Christmas

Matthew

NOD32 by Eset , it has a month free trial too so it'll last you till you upgrade :D

unfortunately the max memory you can install in that dinosaur ;) ;) is 1GB so its never gonna be any good for Vista im sorry to say , you'll manage to run it just a bout , but it'll wheeze along like an asmatic camel ;)

Thanks for the advice.
Although my newer computer, a Dell Inspiron 530 (about a year old) has only 1GB of memory and it runs like a dream. Not sure whether it is to do with the new hardware???? but i'm going to try and upgrade the old Dell anyway and see how it goes. i can always just put the old hard drive back in again and keeps the new memory.

I think I'd have to agree with archie here with regards upgrading that machine to Vista.
I wouldn't waste money on buying an upgrade of Vista to put on such an old machine, it's not just the RAM but all the other parts that may not be capable of running Vista.

Have you tried to run the Vista Upgrade Adviser to see what that has to say about it ?

Well if you can't get the Advisor to run on that machine it's very doubtful Vista would either, sorry but I think that would probably be your answer ;)

Why don't you just use an online scanner instead? You won't have to download any program and you can still scan your system. ESET NOD32 Online Scanner, DR. Web Cureit are some free ones. As to upgrading your old computer, like Archie123 and Joan said, it's probably not going to be Vista Compatible being that old. Minimum memory for Vista Premium, Business or Ultimate is 1 GB. But hey, it may run, but probably not very good, if at all.
