odbcint odbccp32 different versions

Hi,
I am trying to install a chess program on CD.
During the install, I get the following error, and I abort the install.
>The ODBC resource DLL (c:\windows\system\odbcint.dll) is a
>different version than the ODBC setup dll (c:\windows\system\odbccp32.dll).

I googled around and found this:

It says Download and install the latest version of the Microsoft Data Access
Components (MDAC).

I follow the links to:

Where I download cc_x86.msi, only it does not run on vista.

I am getting way over my head, I am not sure what all this stuff does.
Do you have any suggestions on how to fix this?
There was an option in the chess install to ignore the error.
I am a bit nervous about ignoring this error.

thanks

Hello Gordon,

MDAC has been replaced with Windows DAC, which carries out almost all the same functions, plus a few more. Therefore, your computer effectively has MDAC built in, even if your Chess installer does not recognise it. Therefore, ignore the error and continue the install. If your Chess game still does not work, tell me, and I will continue to help you.

Richard,
Ok, I installed it.
But it runs for a minute then locks up.
I see that this is an old game, I guess I ran it on my old windows 98 machine.
So I created a shortcut and changed compatibility to windows 98, and still crashes.

I see that when I go to control panel there is a folder called ODBC.
I do not remember seeing that before?
When I click on it, it has the same error as my original post.
>The ODBC resource DLL (c:\windows\system\odbcint.dll) is a
>different version than the ODBC setup dll (c:\windows\system\odbccp32.dll).

When I do
>sfc /verifyfile=c:\windows\system32\odbccp32.dll

I get this:
>Windows Resource Protection found integrity violations.

odbccp32.dll has a modification date of 4/25/97

I wonder if this install somehow caused this?

thanks

Hello,

I see the problem. Can you please tell me the exact name of this Chess game, as I may know somebody who has fixed this game before???

Also, can you please run sfc /scannow and parse and upload the log file (sfcdetails.txt from your Desktop) See the top yellow box here on how to do this: http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/66978-system-files-sfc-command.html

Have you considered any open source Chess games? We will try to fix it first however. Vista does also come with a built in Chess game. Do you not like it?

Richard,
OK, I ran sfc, attached is the log.
My chess is Chessmaster 5500 (for windows 98).
It is very good and fast.
It has great sound effects. When I make a move, there is a cheering crowd.
I don't think chess is installed in Vista Home Basic.
I tried running Chessmaster again, it complains about SMARTBRD.vxd missing.

thanks

Hello,

It looks like SFC has fixed all proper corruptions :) Sorry about Vista Home Basic not having the Chess Game. As far as I know, it is not illegal to modify your Windows Installation (i.e. hack in Chess Titans) or go open source. Does the CD contain SMARTBRD.vdx?

Richard,
I see that the Chessmaster CD does have SMARTBRD.VXD.
But I think it is not going to be possible to transfer to Vista.
Here is a thread where they tried everything:
Chessmaster 5500 - Topic Powered by Social Strata

My Vista machine is a laptop. It has restore DVDs, not a Windows CD.
So I don't think think they distribute chess titan on my configuration.
I searched my restore DVDs, but it has a bunch of .SWM files.

I think I could build a Virtual Machine (VirtualBox) from Windows 98 CD and run it from there.
That would take some effort, maybe later.

good talking to you,
gordon

Richard,
I wonder if I should uninstall Chessmaster 5500?
The install caused problems, apparently because Chessmaster 5500 was written for windows98.
And I had to run sfc to clean up the files.
The uninstall could cause some more problems.
Alternately, I could just delete c:/program files/mindscape/chessmaster 5500
Maybe that would be safer?
thanks

Hello,

I see your point. Neither are ideal. Uninstall may try to delete a bit too much, though shared components should never be uninstalled, so it will probably be OKish. If you want to remove it, probably uninstall it, then run SFC, though, if there is an .ini file in that directory, we can assume that there won't be massive amounts of data in the registry and it will not cause huge damage. By far the least obtrusive method is to just leave it. It will not cause any further damage like that, and maybe you will get it working!
