Choppy framrate in Windows Vista.

I have recently upgraded from:
Vista Home Premium 32 bit
Gigabyte s-series; don't remember the actual model
Radeon x1650
2gb ram
Intel(R) Pentium(R) D CPU 3.20GHz, 3520 Mhz, 2 Core(s), 2 Logical Processor(s).
To:
Same operating system
Asus P5N-D Velocity Micro Edition
Pny Geforce 9800gtx 512 mb
4 gb ram
Same processor.

Now to the problem, I used to be able to play newer pc games on my old model without any frame drops/chops/sound drops.
Now, everything above happens.
I have the latest nVidia drivers, I have Vista Service Pack 1.
I can't seem to find anything on google that will fix this problem.
Does anyone know what the problem may be?

Hi MatAtMicrosoft, welcome to the board.

The bottleneck seems to be the CPU, assuming that your PSU and cooling are sufficient and stable. Have you try to lower your settings in gaming? BIOS updated? Don't use GPU driver form MS auto update; try version 180.60 or newer from Nvidia. Make sure all connectors and components are set and secure; pay special attention on the SATA connector at the HDD, wiggle, shake and tug on it in making sure.

Hope it is minor. Please post back.

Hi MadAtMicrosoft,

When you upgraded your system, did you reinstall Vista? With such a radical change in hardware, it is advisable to reinstall your OS, be it Vista, Linux or other. This is to avoid possible problems caused by driver and hardware incompatibility. In addition, I notice that you are overclocking your CPU. By all means, feel free to do so. However, I strongly advise against overclocking until you are able to run your system stablely at stock settings. Only then should you overclock, but remember that some motherboards cannot cope at other than stock settings and that identical boards (manufacturer and hardware revision) can behave quite differently when it comes to overclocking.

What kind of RAM do you have and is it running at the required voltage and timings?

If you have for example, RAM modules that require 2 or more volts, the board probably "Auto" set the voltage to 1.8, so check to see that's it running at the required voltage, especially if you're overclocking. Same with memory timings.

The other issue could also be that you're running all four dimm slots with memory, especially if you're overclocking, but we'll check that later, or...if you have all slots filled, you can remove two of the sticks and see if your symptons improve.

I have tried lowering the settings in game, and nothing.
I have 4 120mm fans blowing, I also have a liquid cooling unit, but it hasn't been hooked up.
Everything is in place, all drivers straight from nVidia.

I have reinstalled Vista.
I actually am not overclocking, my processor came like this.

I'm fairly new to this, so I'm not sure how I would do this.

If you do not know how to do this, then I would suggest you to visit one of the forums dealing with your motherboard and ask them for help. They are better suited to help you since they are familiar with that MB. Or if you're lucky, maybe someone here who is familiar with that board and can help. I myself am unfamiliar with the board and manufacture as different manufactures use different BIOS settings, which you would have to get into to check those memory settings, so I can't help you there.

Good luck.

Did you *buy* this system? If so, and it was built for you, take it to the shop and tell them what is going on....

You had best get with him then - it could be any of a number of issues, but if you trust him just ask him - if you think it might not be on the level, you could also try a local computer shop to take a look at it....

Just so I have it right, though, your old processor and motherboard and RAM were *also* running Vista?

My old ram is still in with my old motherboard, this is new ram.
But the processor I am using now is my old one, and it ran with my old motherboard/ram.
Well basically, yes Vista ran my on my old system.

My Computer

Your old system was a bit better than my old system - P4 3.2 GHz CPU, 3 GB RAM, VisionTek x1650Pro AGP video card w/ 512 MB RAM - but with that system I had games set to run in compatibility mode to disable Aero.

Then I built this current beast, originally with a single 8800GTS PCI-e video card w/ 512MB, and it too, seemed like I was having issues - I chalked it up to *then* it being the fact that the old system was 32bit and this was 64bit- but now I am not so sure if it is *just* that - as you can confirm both of us having similar experiences.

It wasn't until I upgraded to a GTX260 (and then added a second one) that I saw the really good graphics I remember from just 9 months ago.....

Could be the overclock. When I was trying to push my CPU it could go higher but my sound started getting choppy when the bus went over 205MHz (IIRC). A slammin CPU is great but not if the subsystem cant handle it.

I'm going to get a 280 in the coming months, hopefully.
I was wondering, if I put my old motherboard in with my processor, 9800gtx, and current 4gb ram, would I see better performance?

Could be the overclock. When I was trying to push my CPU it could go higher but my sound started getting choppy when the bus went over 205MHz (IIRC). A slammin CPU is great but not if the subsystem cant handle it.
I'm not sure if anything is overclocked, I don't believe it is.
I'll have to ask my friend, because he got this system at his work, and when he got it the case was kicked in, and the hard drive was broken.
Everything else *seems* ok though.
