Hello people, I joined this forum in the hope that someone can solve my problem before I go insane!
I am on a satellite broadband connection in Cyprus, and we connect to that connection via a 3com 3cfsu05 switch 5 router, connected to each machine through a network card.
The problem is, while one machine on the router works fine, (how I'm typing this now), my laptop refuses to connect to the gateway. I have tried everything I can think of (or google can), and at my wits end.
Initially, I thought maybe a reinstall would do it as I was running Windows 7 ultimate beta and thought something may of gone wrong with that, so I thought I'd do a fresh install of Vista Ultimate, but the problem still persists.
I have run ipconfig/ release, ipconfig/flushdns, ipconfig/renew but to no avail, /flushdns states it has been successful, yet with /release and /renew it gives me a strange message:
"an error occurred while releasing Interface
loopback Pseudo-interface 1 - the system cant find the file specified"
Dont have a clue what that means.
I then ran winsock, typing in 'netsh winsock reset', which again, didnt work at all.
Then, I tried to fix it with a fix I found on google, I'll copy and paste it rather than explaining it in my own words:
' 1. Open Registry Editor. To do this, click Start, type regedit in the Start Search box, and then press ENTER.
2. If you want to activate the setting for all adapters, locate the following registry subkey:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\Tcpip\Parameters
Or, if you want to activate this setting for a specific adapter, locate the adapter-specific registry key:
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Servic es\Tcpip\Parameters\Interfaces\<Adapter>
3. On the Edit menu, point to New, and then click DWORD Value.
4. Type DontPingGateway, and then press ENTER.
5. On the Edit menu, click Modify.
6. In the Value data box, type 1, and then click OK.
7. Exit Registry Editor.
8. Restart the computer.'
That didnt work either. Now I am clueless as what to do, Ive tried uninstalling the network card drivers (SIS191 ethernet) and letting windows find them and reinstall them, but all to no avail.
The internet doesnt even work in safe mode, so Im not sure whether this is hardware problem or not, device manager say its working properly, and all this coincided with the network going down for 10 minutes this afternoon.
Any help would be most gratefully recieved, thanks in advance,
