Hi all new to the forum,

First post here, running win vista home basic. When I check for updates it says "system is up to date no updates available" but my sister who runs same OS says there have been two updates for win defender one on 4/2/2011 and one on 8/2/2011
I dont use win defender but I wondered why I was not getting updates reminders?
I thought I should still keep win defender up to date, right or wrong?

Welcome to the forum,

If you're not using windows defender there's no reason to keep it updated.

Today is patch tuesday, so there may be something coming your way.

As long as it says you're up to date, I wouldn't worry.

Enjoy your stay, and feel free to ask anything else.

Hello amazongirl and welcome to the Vista Forums!

I hope you enjoy your time here!

Windows Update is usually pretty good. If it says that there are no updates available, I really think that there are none. I have never on all my time here seen a Windows Update say that there are no updates available, when there should be. They occasionally fail to install, but that is different.

Now, why doesn't Windows think there are any updates. It could be that Windows Defender is installing the updates itself, and doesn't go though the main Windows Update process. Windows Defender should have this power.

However, I don't think this is the reason. Due to (mainly legal) reasons, Microsoft does not push updates for other Microsoft products by default, only Windows. Windows Defender is not part of integral Windows.

Please open Windows Update, and on the left hand pane, click on Change Settings. Make sure that the two bottom check boxes are checked:

"Give me updates for Microsoft products and ..." and
"Show me detailed notifications when new Microsoft ..."

You can also do this from the main Windows Update page, by opting into Microsoft Update under "You receive Updates for". You will be taken to a Microsoft webpage and check box to complete this process.

After this, I think that Windows Defender updates will come through!

The very best of luck!

Richard

Hi
Windows update is a cool part of windows vista and all it does is updating currently running microsoft products and others scheduled to access it's services. As said in your post Windows Defender isn't active so it's components are not working including that which should check availability via update centre. The only option left is to manually update it.
