No Video Input

I have been trying to connect my Dell Studio laptop to my Toshiba flat panel via HDMI. When I turn on the tv, my laptop immediately makes the sound as if something has been plugged in, then unplugged (I have no idea what that sound is called, it's a high ding, then a low ding). My TV claims that there is no video input.

Am I doing something wrong? Did I buy the wrong HDMI cable (I have a shielded one). I'm trying to do this on my own without having to admit to male friends that I can't connect.

Help!

Right click the desktop and go to Personalize then Display Settings, A new window will open and you should see two monitors, one grayed out. Click the grayed out one and then check the box to Extend the desktop to this monitor. And then Apply, and it should turn on for you.

If you want to turn off the laptop monitor uncheck This is my main monitor and then check This is my main monitor on the other monitor. And then Apply, and it should turn on for you.
