No network.

Good morning all,
Have HP Presario 500, 32bit (nVidea nforce 10/100 ethenet) that was working fine until suddenly no network was recognized- no wireless. When I try to create a connection I get "This computer does not have a wireless network adapter installed and configured", however under device manager It tells me that my card is working fine.
It also tells me that my "6to4" adapter (whatever that is?) "Windows cannot load drivers required for this device. (Code 31)"
So.... HP and I spent an hour on the phone to no avail. They said it was a known issue and although the laptop is out of warranty, they would repair it, so I sent the unit into HP. Three days later they tell me that it's going to cost $750 to repair my $400 laptop because my laptop has been "dropped".
When I received the unit back from HP (No, I didn't authorize the repairs) lo and behold the wireless light was blue , it recognized my network and all my neighbors as usual, and the wireless worked.... for 10 minutes. The next time I turned the unit on the wireless light was orange, and no network.
The internet works fine when connected with a cable to the router.
Other laptops can see my network and can connect so I know that it's not the router (Linksys WRG54GS)
I've done system restore, no help.
Can I test to see if the switch is faulty?
Can I test to see if the internet card is faulty?
Can the 6to4 adapter drivers be at fault?
Any advice would be appreciated. Thank you all, Alanoutaoz.

First thing i would do is to go into device manager ( type device manager) in search and goto the network adapters and see if they are installed and working. if so I would update the driver from the manufacturer.

If there is a known Hp problem you could ask them what it is, and see how it relates to your problem

If these dont help let us know

Thank you Ken,
In device manager there are two 6to4 drivers installed both of which respond with: "This device is not working properly because Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device. (Code 31) ..... Click "Check for Solutions" button
So I click on "check for solutions" and the nothing happens (I'm hard wired into web) and wait several minutes.
Going to "Update driver" gets a message as follows: "Windows has determined the driver software for your device is up to date" That's the Microsoft 6to4 adapter, File Version 6.0.6001.18000 (longhorn_rtm 08018.1840)
Checking Device Manager, for the NVIDIA ethernet properties, under the general tab reveals, "This device is working properly"
Going to HP's site to check out the system they tell me that this model # has a Broadcom ethernet card, not the NVIDEA that the system claims that it has onboard. I'm reluctant to start importing drivers or updates for things that may or may not be installed. Consequently, I'm more than a little lost here; your consideration greatly appreciated,
Alan.

Hey Alan

so the 6to4 devices are for your networking? what does device manager show for wifi card? is it working "properly" It should show as broadcom, but sometimes nvidia might make their own driver from the broadcom.
Have you looked in event viewer? type event viewr in search, and check to see if there are any errors under the app tab. If you find something either in device manager, or event viewer you can use the snipping tool(type snipping tool in search). Im working on a win 7machine right now but im pretty sure vista has snipping. to upload pics just click on the paperclip shaped icon in the reply box to attach it and click upload

Hope we have you pointed in the right direction

Thanks Ken, but I don't feel any closer to an answer. Under Device Mgr, I cannot find anything, anywhere that mentions or alludes to a wifi card....Not anywhere!
Under Event Mgr I'm unsure what any of it means:clicking on application tab just leads me to another menu which is way beyond my comprehension....
Have snipping tool. What is it that I should snip and upload?

Ken,
As I live and breath, I found in Event Viewer, under admin events tab, an event id 4001, that under it's general tab says " WLAN auto config service has successfully stopped." Does that help? In anticipation,
Alan

Alanoutaoz,

Having sent your laptop to HP and them saying it will take $750 to repair it plus your ongoing problems, if you get to a "I give up" last resort point, the following might be an option:

Buy a copy of BootIt NG from terabyteunlimited.com. Bootit is an inexpensive partition manager that can also backup partitions and supports multi-boot systems. The beauty of Bootit is that when you boot into any OS, it makes that OS look like it is the C: partition. The advantage of that is that you can copy an OS in one partition to another partition and it will still work perfectly without drive letter problems.

In your case, you could create a second bootable partition, install a fresh copy of Vista to it and then see if everything works OK. If that fixes your problems, then use the new fresh Vista OS as you gradually transfer whatever you need from your existing Vista OS to the new Vista OS. You will be able to boot from either one at will.

Then you could just continue using the new Vista OS and convert your old Vista partition into a data partition, or you could copy the new Vista OS into the old OS partition and have two known working Vista OS partitions.

I have a second bootable known working OS on both of my PCs for backup. If I have problems in my primary OS, I just boot into the second copy and see if it is a hardware or software problem. With the huge hard drive capacities now, hard drive space for a second OS is not a problem. If you opt to do this, I've found that 50 - 60 GB per OS partition is large enough to install any amount of software in the future. I keep ALL of my data in a separate data partition on my laptop (and on a different hard drive in my desktop) so data does not impact the size of my OS partitions. Especially video and graphic files.

Thank you Sky,
Since last reporting I have spent 2 hours with Linksys (Phillipines), and another 45 min with Times Warmer, my ISP. Both seem to think that the wifi card is not working as it is not recognized by device mgr under network...or is it the wifi slide switch on the front of the laptop that's buggered?
Linksys suggested buying a USB port wifi, around $30.00.
I see by the forums that installing a new internal card may create problems that would need to be adjusted in the bios; a prospect that causes distress in my intestinal tract.
Would I have to install new drivers and tweak the bios if I bought a new card?
Or is there something else? I only have a 60 gig hard drive so partitioning a new OS is not an option.
Thanks for your suggestions,
Alan

Alan,

Since your laptop's HDD is only 60 GB HDD, another option to try a fresh OS would be to backup that HDD to an external USB HDD. Then format your laptop's HDD and install a fresh copy of Vista. If the fresh copy does not fix your problems, you could then restore the backup and be back to where you are now.

Also, if you have a copy of WinXP, maybe try installing that on your Laptop's HDD during the above process. With only a 60 GB HDD, WinXP might be better than Vista since it takes up less HDD space.

In any event, if you don't already have an external HDD for backup, it would be a really good thing to have anyway.

On a different tack, here's a thread which may help you:

It's fixed! Well it's fixed for right now. Went back to HP tech and was advised that because the wifi device was not showing up in device mgr, I should go to the HP site and download drivers for it...... after which it worked. And they were going to charge me $750 for the same #@[]!!* thing! Ouch! (ok, they said that they had to replace the motherboard and the screen also; all I wanted was the wifi fixed.) This is after I spent a couple of hours on the phone to a tech who said that it was a known problem, and that even though the warranty had ended, they would repair it. Yeah right; if they can do a few hundred dollars extra work on my laptop to break "even." I don't know whether to love or to hate them.
Thank you forum members for your kindness, and your replies,
Alan.
