Epson Status Monitor (part of Epson printer driver) for your printer doesn't work with Vista.Instead try this monitor,it's free and have a lot of features

SSC Service Utility for Epson Stylus Printer.

I have a DX4400 running with Vista and although when doing a print job it doesn't show the ink levels I can check them. I don't know if it will work with your printer but try this, go into the Control Panel and click on the Printers icon, when the window opens right click on your printer then left click Properties. When the properties page opens on the General tab go down towards the bottom and click on Printing Preferences, that should bring up the ink cartridge level indicators to enable you to check how much you have left.

As I said don't know if it will work for your model but most Epsons have pretty much the same software ;)

HP has a(n) solution center program that comes with their printers. Just open that, click the settings tab at bottom right, then in the printer setting field select printer tool box, then select the ink level tab and it should show you what you want to know. Tip; if you use ink refill kits to refill your ink cartridges it will show them up as empty, unless you follow the instructions to allow it to read it. That involves scotch tape and turning printer off and on about 4 times. A pain in the butt for me, I don't follow that. When I notice my colors are off I just fill it up again and insert them back in. It's been working for me for almost a year now. Then when the year is up I replace the cartridge and start the process all over again. Hope this helps.

Also check HP web site for driver update for your printer.
http://www.hp.com/sbso/busproducts_...ermhphighvalue&tafcjnef=fy08&ppc=DSp100504107
click the support and drivers topic on the left hand side, then type in model number of printer and follow screens prompts from there.

Hi Bassfisher,
Thanks for detailed info.

Had already visited Hp site - no drivers or solution center available for download - they say drivers are included in 64bit Vista - which they are, but there is no way to view ink levels etc.

This is what you get with Vista x64

A Basic Feature Software/Driver provides the basic functionality that is necessary to operate the product. It consists of no other software that can enhance the product’s performance or output.
Thanks

Hi Joan,

Nice to hear from you again.

Already tried that - nothing useful there - that's what you get from the Basic driver.

Seems HP want you to buy a new one , so you can get the advanced drivers with it on a cd, even tho. it's pretty much identical to the printer I already have.

What's the model of your HP printer? When you installed the printer software, did it not come with a program(s) for ie.. photosmart and solution center? How old is the printer?

Thanks Bassfisher,

The supplied cd is for XP -tried it but it doesn't work with Vista x64. It is a 1210 all in one printer/scanner.

Like to avoid getting a new one if I can - I don't know anyone who has a more recent but very similar one, so I could borrow their cd.

Any ideas please ?

My next question is: are you running Xp or Vista for your operating system and how long ago did you get it?

Have you been to this web page at HP.

Select your operating system

There is a big difference between Visat and XP. Check out both of them and see if you can download each and burn to CD and try installing. See if that fixes your problem.

Hi Bassfisher,

Sorry if that wasn't clear. Im using Vista X64 .

The printer is not that old - not sure of the exact year.

The software that is with it is for 32bit xp and will not work on Vista.

HP basic drivers for this series are included with Vista - but only provide the basic functions.

Drivers or other software are not available from HP - their website says the basic drivers are already in Vista.

Seems clear they are keen for us to buy new printers.

I have looked at the new similar model - it is so similar , that for my purposes, the only point of buying it would be to get the full set of software on cd.

Hoping someone knew of a 3rd party app. that works with HP printers?
( like the one on the previous page for Epson )

Thanks

OK, now that we determined that it's not vista compatible and only works with xp, I don't think we are going to find anything to make it work. Have you seen any of those pc/mac commercials...funny, but there is a point. Especially the one where it says "don't ask what vista can do for you but ask what you can buy for vista". When vista came out nobody had drivers for peripherals, all the manufacturers where building there stock from scratch to work with vista. Vista 64 bit was even worse than that. That was then and now all most every thing is vista compatible including vista 64 bit. So I am afraid that your going to have to get a new printer that is vista 64 bit compliant. I am all out of ideas, Although it has been fun chatting with you. Maybe some one else here might have a quick fix for you. If you find something that works please let the forum know. Good luck.

Thanks for that Bassfisher,

Yes, that' what I'm looking for - some kind of quick fix/ workaround.

It does the basic functions with the basic HP drivers built into Vista.

Will stick with it for a while.

Doesn't seem to encourage people to choose Hp again for their next printer purchase.

Thanks
