Hi first post so be gentle... heres the problem, i was away for a long time so i do not know exactly what happened but the wife had let me know that the cd she had put in for my son was not playing so i aske her to look at "my computer" to see if the dvd icon was there but no. so i told her to go to device manager and uninstall which she did then restsart the computer. On restart the computer said installing driver for new hardware but it failed..have tried other ways of deleting then reinstalling but still i cannot use the cd/dvd drive..have even gone down the route of purchasning a new dvd writer but that did not work.

by the way error code is" Windows cannot load the device driver for this hardware. The driver may be corrupted or missing. (Code 39)"

This is a problem known to MS. It seems to happen more in Toshiba laptops after an update was applied. There is a regedit fix for it and it works great. It involves deleting the upper and lower filters. see below

[Start] [Run] [Regedit]
Registry Key: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Control\Class
Key Name: {4D36E965-E325-11CE-BFC1-08002BE10318}
Value Data: [Delete All Value Data from UpperFilters and LowerFilters]
Note: Do not delete the Key or the Multi-String Values. Delete only the data values.
Exit Registry and Reboot

I have done this many times with no problems.

Howdy folks. I am having the same problem here. I just installed Vista Ultimate 64 bit and my IDE DVD ROM drive is not detected no matter which cable I try. It is detected on my older XP system however. I am looking for the upper and lower filters, but not finding it anywhere in the registry. Any help is appreciated.

My Computer

the filters are only for when SP1 breaks the,

Umm one question though- how did you install Vista if your DVD was not recognized?

Hehe. I have an SATA DVD drive as well .. but I also just crossfired a new video card to this system .. Which leaves me enough room to access 2 of 6 sata ports .. and those 2 are being used by raided hard drives .. so I tried to put in my IDE DVD drive .. and thus stumbled onto this problem  .

If I can't find the fix for getting my IDE drive recognized by Vista, I can likely get a specialty sata cable that can fit under the video cards however. Seems ashame to have to drop that cash after just dropping a bundle on Vista ..

Make sure the IDE drive is not set (by jumper) to be a slave and yet is the only device on the IDE channel.

Yar. That's actually the first thing I did. I've checked:

1. Jumper Setting. It's set to Cable Select. Mobo only has 1 IDE port. The rest is all SATA.
2. Firm Ware update for the DVD Drive. None.
3. Cable quality. I've tried 3 different cables. Same results with all 3.
4. Drive quality. I've hooked it up to my old gaming rig, and it works. Windows XP OS.
5. Registry Edit fix from these boards. Unless I'm misunderstanding the Upper and Lower Filter registry fix indicated on these boards, this does not seem to be the problem. If anyone wants to provide a step by step for this, I'd put the time into checking it again however.

Rig = Mobo: Intel DX38BT. Processor: Intel Quad Core @ 2.4. RAM: 4GB DDR3. Graphics: 2x 3870x2. PSU: Ultra Modular 1000w. OS: Vista Ultimate 64bit.

Thanks for your time and GAME ON !!

My computer is a Dell D830 with a TSST DVD drive. This also solved my problem. I verified that this was a software MS problem, tried their "Fixit" program (what a waste) and then ended up where they wanted $45 to $55 to fix the problem (and that, as in Dell's case) would have probably ended up with the recommendation to reinstall Windows. It hardly ever seems that someone has a solution to a registry problem, so this was indeed, refreshing.

Now, I have a question. I recently installed Itunes. Could that have resulted in this problem? If so, why? What is the most likely reason?
