Does anyone have a problem with Vista not booting if the computer wasn't shut down right? It will boot till a black screen with only the mouse curser (mouse curser won't move though). I can get into safe mode and have always just did a system restore to an earlier time, but this time, even when sent back to the earliest point it still wont boot.
I have Vista 32bit, have added no new programs, and am caught up with the upgrades (but added none recently enough for it to have caused it).
Does anyone know how I can repair the boot info without having to reinstall windows. I have already got ahold of the boot disk but that didnt fix anything. I guess it at least gets into windows but one of the first startup stuff is corrupt.

I've tried Startup repair multiple times with no effect. As for the repair install, I have no disk becuase Vista came with my computer. I did enable a boot log to show how far it got in its boot up...Does this mean anything (see atachment)?

Who made your computer HP, Dell etc. If its HP you can hit F11 before windows starts to get into the recovery then I believe you need to click on advanced and do a startup repair.

Hello jpb5299, welcome to Vista forums!

Continually tapping F11 from an "off" boot should take you to the recovery manager. It may take more than one attempt to get in. I hope this helps you. The directions below are for an HP machine but they will give you an idea.

Be advised that this will take the machine back to the point when you first took it of the box.
The "HP Recovery Center" will give you the option to send to backup anything you
don't want to lose, so have backup media available to use if you choose this option.

With the machine off press the power button, as soon as you do that start tapping the F11 key.
It may take several attempts to do this, if the first attempt fails, try again.
That should take you to the HP Recovery Center. When there just follow the prompts.
It is pretty much self explanatory. From the time you boot into F11 (not counting
any backups you choose to make) you should be back on a working desktop in about
30 minutes. After it restarts just follow the prompts again to finish the process.

If your first option is system restore select no, which should take you to system recovery.
You want to try system recovery not system restore, unless you have good restore points!

thanks to those who provided help... I am using a Toshiba Satellite A215. I will tell how I wound up fixing the issue for those in the same boat I was in. I wound up borrowing the windows installation disk from my friend and reformatted the hard drive and reinstalled windows...worked fine of course. I then had windows download all the required upgrades. Upon reboot (still booted fortunatelly) it said there were 27 more that needed downloading- 1 important and the rest optional. It would apear that the problem with my comp not booting lies in one of those 26 additional upgrades, because when I decided to load those it wouldn't boot again and I had to reinstall windows yet again, this time loading the first set of upgrades like the first time then selecting the only one of the 27 that needed to be on the comp. I then installed service pack 1... Comp works like a champ now.
SO I guess the moral to this story is for those with toshiba satellites, only get the upgrades if they are absolutely needed.
