Next Office version to ship in 32-bit and 64-bit versions

You learn the most interesting things when you poke around in some of the arcane files that are included with Windows 7 beta releases. In the most recent build of Windows 7 that I’ve been able to examine, I’ve confirmed that Microsoft plans to release its next version of Office in 32-bit and 64-bit flavors. That’s a detail that my colleague Mary Jo Foley didn’t discover in her December 2008 rundown of what we know about Office 14

Anyways, why in two flavors? That doesn't make sense...

But I want to get the beta!

Why not, at least that way it will run on both flavours of the OS, that's my interpretation.

You have the OS in 32 and 64 bit version so it makes sense to make the applications in both so that they will run regardless of which version OS you run. That way there shouldn't be any compatibility problems.

That's my 2 pence worth. ;)

Well my point is, why not just leave at x86 and it works for both? If they do both, then people are gonna go "Wha?" and buy the wrong one, and then complain because it doesn't work right.

Office 07 works perfectly fine with 32bit systems. i do not see the need for 64bit systems.

:huh::huh::huh::huh::huh:

You do not see the need for 64 bit systems????

There is plenty of reason to start making the switch from 32bit to 64bit... 32bit is old and out dated, time to get with the times... 64bit is MUCH quicker then 32bit......

While I wish it could happen, I am glad it does not. Alot of people cannot afford to upgrade to a 64x class CPU at a whim... and alot of manufacturers both Software and Hardware, need to transition the change as well.... Microsoft does not make the calls as far as 32bit or 64bit or 128bit... development across the board throughout the world does that....

People need to realize, we're going through this transition again, this is not new... the same complaining was heard when we went from 16bit windows 95/windows 98 to 32bit Windows NT and Windows XP and Windows 2000.

While they may still continue to support it with security updates, it sounds like Office 2002 will no longer be supported. I may be wrong, they may stop support all together. It is a 7 year old program.....

I used to hate the ribbon too. Now, I like it a lot. My school also installed it on all computers. At first people were frustrated and after a while, people to start to like it a lot.

Why in two flavors? I think it makes sense : to match with the version of Windows used. :)

Windows 95 was a 16bit OS... windows 98 was the first "Hybrid" if you will Operating system, it was 16bit and 32bit.

We are going through this transition again with Windows Vista 64, XP 64, and Windows 7 64bit.... my guess is the release of windows after Windows 7, will be strictly 64bit only.

I think is good that they're thinking about running such applications "natively". Although I wonder about the advantages 64bit office applications may have....
... maybe, open huge Word documents quickly? Never made huge documents.

Ehem, Windows 95 was a 32 bit OS thus the requirements for a 32bit processor. Although, it was the more compatible with 16bit applications (as it was ment to be). It may be considered the same as Windows x64, are 64bit OS, but can run 32bit tasks through the WoW64 "compatibility" layer.

Luckly, we already have nice "Virtual Machine" software, so by the time Only-64 gets standard I'll be able to still use my lovely old applications. =3
