Hello, I am a new Sony Viao laptop owner, with not much computer experience.
I signed up for windows 1 care, and i have an orange (or red) icon on the lower bar, and i get messages that my 1 care is not complete until i have made recovery disks. Can anyone help this poor guy out? (ME) I don't want to mess anything up not being sure what i am doing. Thanks!

Hello Gene507,

Windows Live One Care is a good protection service, nice choice!

Besides that, can you provide a screenshot including this message for us? This makes it easier to see exactly what it is saying.

To make a screenshot:
1. Hit Print Screen/SysRq on your keyboard.
2. Open up Paint (Start -> All Programs -> Accessories -> Paint).
3. Hit Edit -> Paste OR Ctrl + V.
4. Save the image and attach it to a post.

------
Recovery Disks are basically backups of your system that you can restore to if something where to happen (like deletion of important files). You may want to search through the Live One Care for any options to make a Recovery Disk. Don't worry about messing anything up, Vista won't let you screw anything important up.

Well i am not quite a newbie, but i am to vista and i am having a most annoying problem.

I was renaming some freshly ripped music files and had been most of the afternoon and everything was fine, until....

with no warning and no apparent reason, the computer rebooted, which was not a huge suprise, could not find anything wrong or abnormal, and it is not overcloked or anything like that, i have several for my work and this being a new system, and a new OS for me, ive been going thru all the normal debugging stuff that we all have come to know and love with the windows family.:sarc: and dealing with a new mobo as well, this being a Biostar TA780gm2+-hp, amd 4600 64x2 with 4 gig of ram. and 2.5tb of stacked drives in it. sweet machine- but it dont like xp, needs direct x 10 to run at speed, and im learning to love/hate vista. not overheated, built it well and ive been doing this a while.

So i went back to what i was doing, only to find out that my trusty MP3 tag program that i have been using for years kept showing me READ ONLY, when i tried to make changes. so off to properties i go, uncheck the box, tried again, same thing.
repeat ad nauseum.etc, gave up and did a bit of resding about defender and more reading in ownership and file sharing.

Its been 3 hours now, and i still dont have any answers and have a few hundred files to go. seems something has locked all my music, video and karaoke drives into read only mode, and as usual, cant find a doggone thing in any ms help files directly addressing this problem. i may not be in the right thread as i am a newbie here too and havent yet had the chance to scour the site yet, so please accept my humble apologies for the lack of navigation here.

 helllppp!. (please)

Hello madmanjohn,

On your mp3 files go to the properties and on the General tab click Unblock. This should allow editing (or at least it did for me).

Also, please make your own thread when you ask a question different from the original thread poster. This helps your question get solved faster because people in this area of expertise can see your post and answer it, rather than someone who is prepared to explain one thing, have to talk about something totally different.

Glad that helped! If you have any future questions, make sure you provide a screenshot. It saves a lot of time for the answerers.

Sorry. like i said earlier, i'm still learning the navigation of the forum here, so i jumped in where i saw "newbie" activity.
Thanks for the tip- i havent been able to find a "post new thread" anywhere yet, am i blind or just old?

I have sooooo many dumb-guy questions concerning vista.....

Ok Please allow me to explain. i run a mobile dj / lighting and sound company. this is one of my show machines. each drive has a diffeent type of file on it. the one in question is all the mp3 music- which has over 85,000 mp3 files in it in year by year or decade by decade folder tree.

the default player here is PCDJ VJ er 5.6. i does ot show up in any properties dialg but its own.

Al the drives are set up for the ap that runs it. so there is one drive that has nothing but 125,000 karaoke files on it. the next has 6000music videos on it. master drive is a 250 gig divided into 3, the c drive, the d drive is for norton ghoist, nd the dive has all my DMX lighting applications on it.

this thing has been fine for about two weeks, it just did this all of a sudden after it crashed earlier. Ive dne veryhingnatural i can come up with an figured that something has gon awry in windows defender or another secuity thing.

as for posting, the only button i have at the top is "post reply"

I failed to mention- ALL my drives have gone to read only on ALL files. evrything i have tried to disable it has not worked yet

I suspected a bug, so AVG full is happily scanning but so far has come up with nothing

eveything else seems to run normal. just cannot edit any files- by the way-

this include notepad and xml files. - i can read them, and i can create new ones, but cannot edit old ones.

Ah, so this sounds like a permissions error! The crash might have messed up some user data and you may no longer be in the administrator group? Check by going to the users section in the Control Panel. Also right click on the mp3 and hit Properties and go to the Security tab. I noticed that certain users on mine could only write song files, read files, and execute files. This could explain why you can't edit them.

As for the button!
You have to click on General Discussion first, to see the New Thread button.
