1. Sounds live you are talking about the User Account Control. If you are are an administrator and it keeps propting you during installations, running some untilities etc., then that is the normal default. It is a security feature that basically protects your machine by getting you to acknowledge certian activites. UAC can be disabled or configured.

2. Vista does alot of housekeeping by default, when the system is idle. This is especially true in new installs. It tends to settle down over time. Some processes that might cause this is vista indexing your drive and defrag running in idle periods. Those can be turned off.

3. I typically havent experianced that. You would probibly need to post system specs and more specific examples for help on that one.

If you are asking how to turn off the Scheduled Defrag to stop excess HDD activity, then go to Start, and type Defrag and click Disk Defragmenter. Then click the checkbox that says 'Run on a schedule' to remove the tick and thenh click OK. I would recommend that you defrag your drive(s) manually every so often to help performance.

Also, disabling SuperFetch might help with lowering HDD activity. Be aware that SuperFetch is what loads often used applications into memory for faster startup so I don't really recommend disabling it but if you don't mind a slower application startup, you can disable it.

To disable, press the Windows Key and R and type services.msc and click OK. Find Superfetch in the list and right click it and choose Properties. Then change the Startup type to Disabled and click the button that says stop, then click OK. If you find that it doesn't really help or you need it back on, just go back to its properties and change the startup type back to Automatic and click Start.

Hello dastox, welcome to Vista forums!

Don't let anyone tell you different, turning this off (disabling it) is a Really Bad Idea!
(it's part of system security)

Oh comon we have managed without for long enough until Vista came along , its just an annoyance , along with sheduled defrag and indexing , the last two just making your pc grind on for hours on end with little or no real benifit.

If you use your pc alot run your own defrag once a month it will suffice :D

UAC is so annoying its had me screaming at my pc ;) After a couple of tweaks Vista actually becomes a nice user friendly experience , instead of an O/S that treats you like a child ;) ;)

Every gaming pc i build with Vista gets everything tweaked before the customer gets it , if i dont they bring it back and hassle me askiing why they cant do anything without Vista asking them if they really want to ;)

To encourage the "common user" to disable UAC is an irresponsible thing to do.
We are not going to turn this persons thread into a 'war'; end of discussion!

well i suppose i see your point , however i dont see how UAC will help anybody in any situation as in my experiance new users tend to "allow" everything anyway whether they know what it is or not , making UAC as much use as chocolate fireguard.

Im just disagreeing with your point is all , let him make his own mind up , this is after all a discussion forum is it not?

Ted, do not ask him to start a dis. about uac. The servers will probably crash:) however it is up to the user what they do but go with TED on this. It is there for a reason. If you want your computer to start dialing the clock in australia do not disable UAC. I think you get the idea.
