I bought a new copy (non-upgrade) of Vista Ultimate from an online retailed that I have been buying PC hardware from for YEARS, and I trust them a lot.
The plastic case was pretty beat up when I received it, lots of scratches, some small cracks, etc. The cardboard flap on the back was a bit beat up too. The case was not sealed in plastic (should it be?). There was a round plastic sticky seal at the top of the case (either over or under the Windows barcode showing genuine product). Once I opened the case it seemed like there was just a little bit of dust inside the case and both of the discs had some dust on the back and one had a few VERY tiny scratches (probably from the dust).
Based on your experience with your copy of Vista and its packaging... did I get a new copy? Like I said, this is one of the most reputable PC hardware dealers online so I don't think they'd knowingly do wrong. I don't know anybody who would re-sell a copy of Vista (or accept a return in the first place).
But I'm confused how it got so beat up. But, for all I know, it came from MS warehouse this way. If it's not supposed to be wrapped in plastic, then I guess it's even more understandable. I can see it if this was in a retail store that it would get tossed around a lot and scratched up on the outside, but I wouldn't expect that from an e-tailer (unless, again, it came from MS like that). Moreover... it's an SP1 disc... so it can't have been in existence for THAT long... so it can't have had that much time to get beat up and have dust somehow work its way inside the case.
If this was anything else but a $280 piece of software, I wouldn't be noticing this so much...
