Hi,

I stumbled on this forum by acident. I was google searching for an answer to a question. Google provided a link to here. I browsed this forum and was interested. So I created a user ID and joined the forum. I only answered 4 questions from other threads. But, when I returned to the forum a message kept displaying ( to recieve credit in the news groups for your posts, you must use quote. Ok, so I went back and redid my answers using the quote button. Now, as silly as it may sound, where is the newsgroup that the message refers to?

Hi djartsinc, and welcome to the Vista Forums

It appears you have been caught in the Forum/Newsgroup trap :)

Here at the Vista forums, we have the actual forums which are the first 16 on the forum list. In addition we have syndicated feeds from the relevant Microsoft newsgroups, which form the rest of the list you see on the main page.

What this gives us is access to the knowledge base of the newsgroup users in addition to the 100 000 plus members here.

Unfortunately the etiquette expected for posting in Forums and Newsgroups differ. In the forums the previous posts will always be available and so it is not normal to use a quote. The newsgroups are however designed for use with an offline reader and so it is considered courteous to include the previous entries in the post, with quotes, to help with readability.

When posting in a newsgroup the system here should provide a note that you are posting outside the actual forum and so for these I would suggest that you use the quote button to meet the requirements. In the actual forum the use of quotes is optional and is normally only used to emphasize a particular point.

To access the newsgroups directly you will need to point a newsreader application to the group addresses which are given under the title of the non-forum groups, Eg the hardware newsgroup is microsoft.public.windows.vista.hardware_devices

Hope this explanation will help you to gain the most help from the forum :D
