new powersupply and no activity

Hi so I just took my 300w power supply and upgraded it to a 850w for plans of upgrading everything in the near future, but when i did so, it booted for maybe 5 mins and everything was working and then it shut off... perminently. I get absolutly no response when i hit the power button now, and i was wondering if it is possible to fry a processor or mother board with too much power? because i wasn't overclocking anything, all normal stuff, but they are like 6 years old. any help would be greatly appriciated! thanks!

Hi,

Try swapping the power supply back to the original one that worked. If that fails, then the fault must be else where.

Could be a possibility that the motherboard is fried, but if you can get that 850 replaced with a 300W one and check.

I have re installed my 300w, the one i had it working with, but that was no loger working either, and since it doesn't boot up to bios, should i expect a fried motherboard? also how would you check to make sure a power supply is working?

Hi,

Some PC's need specific power supplies (Size restrictions due to the case design) but most are standard sizes & therefore replaceable. However this type of modification effects your warrenty.

The other thing to bear in mind, HP does not support upgrades of their hardware. They always offer "Direct replacement parts" like for like are offered.

well my new power supply fits into the huge azza 1000 case i have, and im not worried about the warrenty. i did the power supply test with the paper clip and it worked, and ran all of my fans except what was on the mother board (because that one was unpluged). but when i plug it back to the mother board i have no fan response or any response, no beebs no nothing. is there a way to test the motherboard for activity? im probably just going to get a new one, but i don't want to end up frying that one too

No, you cant fry your setup by simply sewitching psu. Though you can by not seting things up right.

Say if you plugged the 8 pin pci-e power into the 8 pin cpu power... but it usually doesn't boot.

Just because the psu powers fans doesn't mean it can power properly. You need to use a DDM, multimeter, to see what the voltage really is.

What 850W did you buy? My ultimate feeling is you bought a bad psu that popped an just took out 1 or more parts. This is the best reason to not cheap out on psus.

You can't test out the mobo without using other parts. Are you sure all the cdonnections are plugged right? Nd all the ram is still in place? Only check you csan do is search your board for damage. Burn marks, popped capacitors and broken connections.

I would NOT run that power supply, and wouold take it back.

well the power supply is a coolmaster 850w, it cost $125 and thats almost what the mother board i am looking at getting costs, so i wouldnt call that cheap. but i am pretty sure i connected everything properly becasue it booted, and i had it running for like 10 mins, but i don't have my motherboard mauel so i cant be 100% sure

Do not spend $125 on a 775 mobo.

You can get an AMD setup for that price, mobo and cpu, and even RAM. It'll whoop the c2d and allow future upgrades easily.

Coolmaster are okay.. 850Ws is alittle over kill btw, you could easily run your rig on 500Ws.

Why did you upgrade your psu? might help determine whagt happened.

Well I upgraded because I want to eventually run 3 nvidia geforce 570s, not for a while but i want the option, and i will for sure be sticking with the intel chipset, i had bad experinces with amd. so i guess what I did was I got a new case so i put everything into the case from the old computer. everything worked fine, put the new power supply in, which yes is overkill right now, and then it worked great for 5-10 mins, then all the sudden everything shut off.

my goal is within the month to buy a new motherboard and an i7 2600k, as well as a new harddrive and windows 7. the only thing ill be keeping from my old rig is the 500gb hd just as a backup to the new 2tb hd. so my reason for upgrading is because im building a new rig, one that will be very good at gaming, no matter what game. (i do want to 3x sli, but i will only be buying 1 570 to start with.)

Okay... Unfortunately, 3 570's won't run on 850W, does it have 6 6pin connectors? Also tri sli isn't worth the money. 2 580's should be better.

Unless youre going to repurpose the 775 setup, get a p67 and i3 now till the 2600k comes.

But if you are getting a 775, get a used one.

775 is the socket type of a core 2 dual/quad cpu. i7 9xx is a 1366 socket, i5 750 is 1156, and a i5/7 2xxxk is a 1155 socket.
