New dual boot problem

Hi:
wanting to add XP as an addl os using dual boot. I managed to get XP installed along with Vista home basic, but apparently messed up the boot sequence. I can can boot Vista, but not XP ...error window says
file: \ntldr
status: 0xc000000f
the selected entry could not be loaded as the application is missing or corrupt

I used Vista Boot Pro 3.3 to set the booting.
If I set VPR to install legacy booting, it will boot up with XP (no dual boot choice), but not Vista. If I select use legacy boot for selected drive E (XP), it says it is set, but a reboot brings me back to the error above.
If I use VBR and set booting for Vista, only Vista boots. I have tried using the XP CD to do a repair install, but it asks for a password, which I never have set. When I hit enter, it keeps asking for password, then times out after the 3rd failed attempt. I only have the Vista backup CD (2 actually) from Dell, not an install Vista CD. My hd is a SATA, and I see that may be a problem by reading other threads here, but I have no floppy drive, only the cd/dvd. If I need another file which may be missing, can someone point me in the right direction ?

It could be the bootmanager that needs reinstallation.

Thanks Echrada, but all I managed to do was kill all os...LOL. managed to reinstall XP again, and .Net framework 2.0 and drivers and VPB3.3 again, but now I'm right back where I started...when I start pc, I have the option for recovery E, Vista C or XP D, but when I select D for XP , it gives me the same error as posted originally.
So I use C for Vista, and can then open VPB and set the boot mode to Vista boot, and all drives, and I can only boot Vista then. If I select legacy boot and set it for D drive only, where XP actually is, I can no longer boot up Vista...only XP. I am obviously missing a cmd somewhere, as selecting a drive for the vista or legacy boot does not seem to work for a single drive, but rather all of the drives then take that boot setting.
Maybe Sidney 1st can walk me thru this ?

Reinstall XP and Vista in this order. It will repair the boot manager. XP and Vista need to be in separate partitions.

Which file should I select ? I did the iso file and that just got me lost in its options as I dont understand most of it.
Sorry for being so lame.

I think I have it all set that way...one hd, diff partition for each : Vista is shown as C drive w/104 GB, Recovery is shown as D drive with 10GB, tho when I work in XP, it shows recovery as E drive, and XP is shown as D drive in Vista with 34.5GB, but shows as E drive in XP...

Do you have the XP and Vista installation CD's? If so you have to create two partitions. In the the first one install XP from the disc - when you come to where to install the o/s choose one of the partitions and do XP first - complete the whole installation and then start the Vista installation and choose the next partition for that.

Maybe I am not understanding what you mean by 2 partitions...the orig setup from dell, with a single 160Gb hard drive, has 2 partitions on it: one is called C drive and holds the Vista os. The other is called D drive, and holds the recovery files.
I shrank the partition that held Vista, and then renamed the unalloted space on it to E, when the pc is in Vista mode, but when it is in XP mode, it sees that E drive as D drive, and the recovery files in XP mode are shown as E drive...
so I think I do have a seperate partition for each...one for Vista, one for recovery, and one for XP. I did not touch Vista, just shrank the size down from some 140GB to 104 GB, and renamed the unalloted space that was left over from shrinking the Vista partition.

I do have an installation CD for XP, but none for Vista, only the backup CDs that came from Dell.

Format E and install XP on it then install Vista with your back up CD on C after formatting that as well. You should then be able to boot from either when you boot up - it should give you a choice of either XP or Vista to boot up with.

So then XP cannot be added to Vista, but Vista has to be added to XP? Then I need to arrange to back up all my files before I format the hd. Thx for the help.

You dual boot in legacy order. XP before Vista and 32-bit before 64-bit. Backup to another drive. Blank the OS drive. Install XP to drive C:. Install the service packs. Install Vista to drive E:. D: will most likely be the CD/DVD drive. You could change its drive letter on the CD/DVD. Windows will fix the boot manager.

Found the solution for me as I dont have an external drive for backing up all my mp3 files...and this is with Vista already installed:

insert your Windows XP CD and create the partition you wish to install XP on. After the installation is complete you should boot automatically into XP.
Now you need to move some files. First, make sure you have set your folder options to see hidden files and to show protected operating system files. Then open Windows Explorer and go to the drive where Vista is installed. Copy the folder Boot, and the files bootmgr, boot.ini, NTDETECT.COM and ntldr and paste them to the root of your XP drive.
Then download Vista Boot Pro and save it to your desktop or somewhere else that you can easily access. Unless you already have .Net Framework (v2.0 at least) it will redirect you to a Microsoft page where you can download this necessary component.
Install and run Vista Boot Pro and open the "Bootloader" tab. Select "Reinstall the Vista bootloader" and press Apply. Then go to the Manage OS Entries tab and select "Add new operating system entry" and make sure you select "Windows Legacy". Give the new entry a name (ie: Windows XP) and select the drive letter you have XP on and then select Apply. You can also choose which entry you would like as the default the system will boot to.

Now I can choose which OS to boot from !
Thank you all for putting up with a moron like Me !

If you followed my post, you could have managed it in some clicks!
BTW, you can install XP before or after Vista, it does not matter.
When you have the Vista CD, just repare the boot with the CD, if you don't have it, just download a recovery CD.
As said before, vista boot pro and Easybcd manage dual boot in an very easy way.
