new build - Asus p6t deluxe issue (maybe)

I have just put together a new system


i7 920
p6t deluxe V2
8800 gts 512
bunch of hard drives
OCZ 700w power
OCZ 12 gb ram ( to arrive on tuesday )
vistax64 - not yet installed

This may sound like a stupid question but is it possible to access the bios or see anything on screen without the ram installed.

I've turned the system on and the lights are on and the fans spin but the screen is blank (without a signal ) - don't get any beeps warning about no ram....It looks suspiciously like my old Mobo when I killed it with a bios update.

I powered up the system because I read you can access the SSD browser on the mobo and I wanted to see if it works.

Any reasurance is welcome...you tell me I'm an idiot too it that's applicable:eek:

Well..... I have never tried it...... Do you have a screen hooked up? You could check to see...

I've adopted a skewy approach to system building this time round...and I'm being a little impatient too.

yep..a screen is hooked up.....

I think it might be ok. I just googled it and the general consensus is that the Mobo needs the cpu / gpu and ram to post....famous last words


If anyone has tried it without ram it would be good to know all is OK still.

Pop in some RAM and check to see if it still works. I would think it would need RAM to run, but not to post...

Uuummm..that's what I thought....hence the post to check and see if it was a problem or not.

I only have ddr2 at the moment so I'll have to wait for the ddr3 to arrive on Tuesday...

Oh well... Two days right? I always hate waiting....

It makes sense that it would not need RAM for the BIOS because that doesn't really use memory. So I think it will work....

update: just popped in 12gb ddr3 and it's runs beautifully....phew

Note: the Asus p6t deluxe v2 needed a bios flash to the latest version to post with all 6 ram slots filled with OCZ3G1333LV6GK x2

I found a good deal at overclockers.co.uk - 12gb OCZ 1333mhz for £143..blooming marvelous...it's c9 though - but I need the capacity for my large Photoshop files - actually 24gb would be ideal but that's not out yet!...I think unless you use heavy files 12gb is overkill. 4 -6 gb is about right for most applications.

OCZ does have the 12GB kits available for 1.3GHz

Put in 2 kits of those and 24GB's on that motherboard would be an thunderbolt over the speed of 12GB's :D I would purchase 24GB's if the ram modules wouldn't be so damn expensive!

Hey Ted,

I've been away working so I haven't had time to log in too much...yeah, it was a cautious approach with the p6t flash but I made sure I did it right...I also made sure the motherboard had a bios recovery and removable chip, just in case.

@Gnys - thanks for the link - I thought the 12gb chips weren't available yet...arrgh..I was holding off the i7 build until I could get 24gb but I just sold a bunch of paintings and wanted to get the build in this side of the tax year. Oh well....

.....I just checked the link again and the 12gb chips are 6x2gb sticks - I guess the wait is still on...

You definitely need RAM, CPU and a form of GPU to POST. But you've probably worked that out by now

those 12gb kits have 6 modules @ 2gb each......... you need six, 4gb DDR3 memory modules to get 24gb.... Im not sure anyone has released 4gb memory modules quite yet, but the support is there with the ASUS P6T Deluxe....

The P6T will not beep, it just wont do anything, it does hwoever flash lights the number of flashes is what signals the post error.


In order to boot into Splashtop, you need memory installed since itself is a operating system and does use system memory to run. No memory = no express gate splashtop.

If you were able to disable splashgate/Express gate, you would see the system attempt to post but with a memory error. But the expressgate is enabled by default from the factory.
