Network Woes

Hi guys,

For my first post I think this one will have you thinking.....

I have a Laptop running Vista & a PC running XP Media Centre Edition on a small network. The problem is :

Both Laptop & pc can see each other in the network.

From the pc I can access the shared files on the laptop, no problem.

I cannot access any files on the pc when I select the pc in my network I get an error which says " Cannot access \\computername

Check the spelling of the name, otherwise there may be a problem with your network.

I have attempted pinging the pc from my laptop, but it keeps timing out
I can ping my laptop from my pc

I opened a browser on my laptop and entered \\ipaddress of the pc . I got an error. pc cannot be found.

I did the same \\ipaddress of the wireless router. I got an error. cannot be found.

I did the same \\ipaddress of the laptop. I was able to see all the files on my laptop..

If you look at the image, this is my network. when I attempt to access the pc named DB that is when the problem arises.

Several weeks ago the problem was the other way around I could even share the printer which I cannot do now.

Hi all,

I'm still struggling with this problem, its annoying me to bits.

Maybe I've stumbled accross something that may help you a little. Please take a look at the new image I have posted see if you can understand my dilema. Why are there dashes from the Laptop to the router ?? can anyone tell me. I have run a program called Network Magic. It has shown I have connectivity to the computer and printer on my network, I'm just unable to from share files and folders from my XP Computer or use the printer.

Here try this.

Network Map in Windows Vista does not display computers that are running Windows XP

Some xp machines don't show up in the vista network map for what ever reason. Microsoft has a hot fix for this. It's the LLTD responder. Download on the xp machine then check your network map. It may take a few moments to register. Also make sure your firewall is set for file sharing on both computers. Some firewall have a tendency to block access, CA firewall is known for this.

Hi,

I assume you have already got the LLTD Responder on your XP machine.

Try changing the workgroup name on your xp machine so it is the same as the name of your Vista network.

Right click My Computer>Computer Name>Change

in the Workgroup box, type in the name of your Vista network ( which bizarrely, by default is Workgroup )

Click ok, ok again to confirm , then restart the xp machine.

( To check the name in Vista - right click Computer >Properties )

Hi Guys,

Thanks for the replies. LLTD responder has been installed & the workgroup names are the same. All firewalls have been turned off ( for troubleshooting only).

I find it quite wierd that I can see my XP computer from my laptop but unable to share/see files or use the printer. When the computer is visible on my network map.

We're in the same boat as I'm having the same problem on my small home network consisting of the 2 laptops and a desktop. One laptop is preloaded with Vista Home and the other latop and desktop are loaded with winxp pro SP2. All laptops/pc are wired to a d-link 8 port switch. Static IP address and assigned to each workstation and Workgroup is identical but i cannot ping IP address of of the workstation on LAN. All i get is "request time out."

But when i used an existing IP address of another laptop on the same LAN, I'm getting IP conflict on both laptops.

Very confusing and i posted my query last week and still waiting for a response.

Hi all,

Just a quick thought. I read recently that if my cable was a cross over and not a straight though the connection will only work one way as a cross over is intended to link two PC directly and not withe a hub or a router. would this give me the problem I am experiencing.
