The problem of my VISTA 64 HP not accessing iMAC shares is solved:
The solution was to use the active UID/PWD of the account logged on to the iMAC to get access to its shares. As I recall, it is not necessary to have the same credentials established on the Vista as on the iMAC, only that the logon credentials entered on the Vista logon screen be those of the account active on the iMAC. This only applies, as best I can tell, to the case where an iMAC account is active. I have not tested the case of no account is active to see if this technique would work.
One other caveat, read the post at http://techrepublic.com.com/5208-10878-0.html?forumID=102&threadID=223871&messageID=2518050 which details making a registry change to access the iMAC. I made that change and is a part of the solution.
