Network Sharing Folders

I have vista32 HP and have a few home notepads and PC's mainly running W7. I have the main pc on cable to a router BT Homehub bringing the internet in. All remote stations work wireless through the 'setup a wireless network' using the usb
I added folders from the Main pc using 'MUSIC' for example and set up sharing properties and unlocked all permissions. Done this a few weeks back and all works.
However any new files added to these folders cannot be seen in the network?
I deleted network and sharing and rerun the process using usb...but still could only see the odler files
I manually added a sub folder and sharing permissions which then showed as a seperate network folder but when clicked it said you do not have the rights....even though all permissions were unlocked

Thus I am stumped....how can I get folders to auto refresh so new files are instantly available and why canot view some folders when all permissions are unlocked?

many thanks in advance

Hi neil2jo,

When setting sharing for the new folders, I'd wager you get access denied when trying to set Advanced Sharing as well. I discovered the same problem on my system. Right click on the folder being shared (with access denied) and click on properties and then click on Security. Then click on advanced and check the special permissions to see if Everyone has Deny access set (I'll bet it does) - there's probably one that says Deny and one that says Allow. If so, that Deny is overriding everything else. Select that entry and delete it. You should now have access to the folders and should also be able to set advanced sharing for everyone and that should take care of that problem.

If you fix that sharing problem for all the other shared folders (and set advanced sharing), I suspect the new files will show up just fine and be shared (but I'm not certain - that may be something else - though it's worth a try).

I hope this helps.

Good luck!

Welcome
Its getting late now but I will give this more attention tomorrow.
For now this is my suggestion and it has helped at least of half a dozen other members, when you manually set up the files you were denied permission, make sure that all the permissions etc are set up properly and try again.
If it still does not work it may be because you only think that you are the administrator, you are actually only the ass't administrator.
Enable the real administrator
http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/67567-administrator-account.html
and try now.
If it still does not work try in safe mode.
Based upon past experience this will work.
If you still have problems tomorrow, I will see if we can come up with something better.
If this works we will have a handle on the problem and make resolution that much easier.

This is for testing purposes to see where the problem lies.

Where did that second set of folders come from? Were they made on another computer or a different OS?

Hi Richard, thansk for reply
I went to the link and copied the text, my response was typical help DOS, NET USER (username [password:*) etc etc
i.e my text was not quite correct. I checked spelling and spaces/no spaces and got the same result
For the record my PC is only set to Administrator I have no user accounts all be it I have renamed the admin account. I also changed 'administrator' to the new name and got the same results

In regards to setting up sharing, I actually dont have a problem the system seems to allow it. All tick boxes allowed, the 5 second refresh of files/sub folders happens and the share icon can be seen.
the unlying problem is the access from the remote stations
The newer files are not showing from the remote stations, i.e the folder is not refreshing to show and share the new files. they cant been seen, even though all older files are visible and accessible
Along with manually selecting the new file, then sharing sharing that file, when accessed from the remote station, the file is not permissable see administrator...
Yes all tabs are allow and there is no deny in any field

I'm guessing something simple like sharing a file already in a shared folder probably confusses Windows. So if i can find out why new files for the last few weeks cannot be accessed/refreshed, then I guess that will solve the overall problem

The error that most people make is that they do not use an elevated command prompt (CMD)
When you have the cmd do you see your user name or system32? You should see system 32. Give it one more try.
If we can activate the hidden administrator we can use it to work on the files and/or we know that it is a permissions error.
http://www.vistax64.com/tutorials/181765-elevated-command-prompt.html

At the end of your post you have given your opinion which may actually be correct, but I am trying to find out for sure. The hidden administrator can work without permissions, but that is its only special ability. If he can perform, we can work together to fine tune the permissions; if it cannot perform then the problem lies elsewhere.

Some updaes below, but 1st re CMD
got there it was a 'space' before '/active:yes' and no space after....duhhh...bring back underscore '_' lol

Before I got to the above. I cleared down sharing in various ways and re shared in various ways. During one point it refreshed the sharing files and newer files showed but were none accessible.
Then I done the admin cmd as above and somehow lost the newer files again

So went back through the set up in the following order, having stopped sharing
Advance sharing 'everyone' all allow (no deny), then went to sharing used drop down to everyone and 'co owner' as will want access.
I can once more view the newer files still no access

One other thing I have noticed, is right click the folder and the tab read only is coloured, if I remove it and apply, all looks good, close the folder and look again the readonly is back to coloured, it has reset...could this be blocking access?

appreciate your time...all this so I can move some basic games to my boys PC upstairs as his PC has no drive...modern times everything gets smaller...not easier lol

My Computer

ok somehow solved via the following

went to advanced security
permissions - 'edit'
selected everyone 'edit'
checked all were ticked in allowed (they were) but still applied
then the key seemed to be still in permissions
click the tab button replace all existing inheritable permissions..........
Applied and that seems to have worked

Now looking back at the above the same tab is no longer highlighted so I am not sure if this problem will recoccur, but for now I have access to the hidden files and can open the folders/programs

I apprecaite everyones help and hope my finding might help someone in the future
Happy Christmas to all

Congratulations on finding the solution (at least for what presently exists and a way to do so periodically if new files continue to have the same problem).

I'm also pleased it seems to be resolved, but I suspect new new files will have the same problem. I think you hit on it though when you were discussing inheritable permissions. Perhaps if you remove the inherited permissions, the problem will go away. The risk is that your own permissions may be inherited also, so removing them may again prevent access. I suspect the answer is to go upstream to where the permissions are being inherited from and make the permission changes there and apply them to all subdirectories and files.

It's just a thought - I'm not certain it will work. Just something for you to consider.

Thanks for the feedback - it will help others with similar problems.

Good luck and best wishes!
