Network notification icon slow to change

When I boot into Vista 64 I get access to the Web very quickly (can check for my mail and access websites). Yet the network notification icon takes about a minute or more to change to one that indicates that its successfully connected to the network.

It's a wired connection to a Linksys BEFSR41 router. I change OS’s using swap-able SSDs in a Vantec NexStar SE tray and boot the same system to Windows 7 where the notification icon appears almost immediately. I also have a laptop running Vista32 which accesses a Linksys Access Point connected to the same router. And its network notification icon also shows connectivity very quickly (5-10 seconds) after bootup.

I've tried reinstalling the ethernet controller driver, did the 'netsh winsock reset' and 'netsh int ip reset resetlog.txt' commands and that didn’t help.

Today I changed the router to a v43 version of a Linksys BEFSR41 (my old v2 was from 2004) that Newegg had on sale for $19 w/free shipping. That's not made any difference.

Since the web works fine very quickly after bootup I don't really care that icon takes its time to change. But does anyone know what might be causing this delay?

Thanks,

Russell

Hi,

This could just be a system refresh delay whilst the system is still loading & completing update status, software validity, network configuration checks etc. etc.

So I wouldn't go chasing anything if I was you, as long as its working (as expected) there shouldn't be an issue.

It's FIXED :-)

It turned out to be the Nero 10 “Nero Update’ service.

Service Name: NAUpdate
Path to executable:
Program Files (x86)\Nero\Update\NASvc.exe

When I disable that service the network icon behaves normally and the network connection '2screens+globe' icon appears in about 1-2 seconds after bootup.

I’ll just leave it disabled and re-enable it if/when I wonder if a newer version of Nero is available.

Shows what happens when you're stubborn and keep poking 'til it's fixed (or else damage your system beyond repair <g>).

Hi,

I'm glad you have traced the offending item. I would think if you contact Nero support they would be interested in your comments & findings.

Then they could look into the issue & release an update for everybody to run their systems with auto update enabled.
