The network icon in the system tray disappeared. In Taskbar-and-Start-Menu-Properties/Notification-Area/System-Icon the Network is grayed and unchecked. What could be a remedy to recover the icon?

Sometimes a simple restart will restore the Network icon. If not, then this tutorial may be able to help you restore it.

Seems the disappearing icon issue is a regular problem due to Microsoft Vista 64 updates. This time the automatic update installed 13 updates (11 related to MS Office 2007). Took about 4 long restarts for the Network icon to reappear and the restart time to return to normal.
Seems it usually takes at least 2 restarts for all the processes to load properly after most vista 64 updates.
