network addresses

Hi guys, im new here and not much of a network guy. My desktop is connected to my dlink router, and my laptop is connected wireless via router. Both pc's run vista 64.

From what i was told every device should have a different ip address. But my pc and router seem to have the same.

So far my "obtain ip address automatically" is checked. Everything seems to work fine, But when i try to change my pc's ip address to lets say 192.168.0.X, my internet stops working.

If I change the ip address of the router to 192.168.0.X, my default gateway changes to the same address. Im assuming thats normal.

Here is a screen of my network map if anything seems to be out of the ordinary

Hello kymira,

The details you provide appear to show a perfectly normal working system :D

Your Router is set to 192.168.0.1 this is also the gateway so appears anywhere that the gateway address is presented and will change in all places it's shown.

The ipconfig shot you show gives the device ip of 192.168.0.100 which is different from 192.168.0.1

if you run the ipconfig on your other system it will show a different number in the range of 192.168.0.2 to 192.168.0.254 ( this range is set up in the router)

if you wish to manually set the ip on your computer you need to exclude this number from the range automatically assigned by your router. you also need to set the subnet mask and the default gateway manually to suit the setup you require

You will need to read the manual for your router to discover how to do this but is probably in the advanced lan settings.

As your system is working I would advise that you leave it on automatic unless you have a technical reason to change this :D

---I found it easier to phone the1-800-number for the 'router' - they helped me set the main pc + laptop, over the phone, step by step - works 100% now for me---
