Netgear router, and cable modem questions...

so yesterday i went budget and bought a 40 dollar Asus wireless router for my ipod touch at home. went through a lot of agony setting the thing up, eventually got on the phone with Comcast tech support walking me through.

i eventually got it set up, and working, however, i no longer have the full 100mbps speed on the desktop, as its now recieving the wireless signal instead of the mainline from the ethernet cable. not sure if thats normal, or solveable. anyways, that was with the budget Asus WL-520GC.

Today my sisiter calls me and asks if i want her NetGear Wireless-N 300 router. (WNR2000). heck yes i do! so i pick it up, disk, cable, etc...

i get home, (and maybe this is where i went wrong) but i unplugged the Asus, plugged in the NetGear, popped in the Install CD, and Bam. wont recognize the ethernet cable/network adapter. cant get past step one of install. after some digging myself, i gave up, re-plugged in the Asus, had to go through a bit of a hassle, but here i am connected again with the Asus.

id really like the Netgear to work, since its a lot better model, and shouldnt give me so much performance loss on the desktop.

anyone know whats goin on here?

If the Netgear router is second hand it will most likely need resetting to factory defaults, you can do this by poking a pin into the the indented rest button on the back,

It may be that you just have to restart your PC.

Could you also please fill in your System Specs under User CP so I can find any possible network card updates for you.

In terms of the alleged performance drop, I can almost guarantee that you won't notice a difference especially if you don't do local networking.

That 100MB/s is what an ethernet cable can handle.

Your Internet connection will be no more than 12.5MB/s (which is only achievable in Japan and South Koreas far as I'm aware).

It's more likely to be less than 1MB/s.

It is possible that that cheap router is only compatible with Ethernet 10 (10MB/S) but that really shouldn't make a difference if you're only using it for internet access.

PS a Mega bit (Mb) is different to a Megabyte (MB).

A megabit is one eighth of megabyte and internet speeds are advertised in Megabits to make them seam faster.

Both routers should be fine, but if ou want the Netgear one working I'll help you get it there.

If you have any questions please ask.
