Need scanner that works on Vista

I need a photo scanner that works on Vista. I purchased a Epson Perfection V500 and have not been able to successfully install it. I have spent hours on the phone with Epson support, downloaded new drivers, etc. Nothing worked and I returned the scanner since Vista could not install the drivers.

I would appreciate information on a scanner that has been successfully installed and actually works on Vista. Just because the scanner manufacture states their product and drivers works with Vista doesn't mean it will.

I use a Epson DX4450 printer/scanner/copier. It works very well with my system and has signed 64bit drivers. It will also copy without the computer being turned on which is a nice feature.

Thanks for the information on the DX4450 printer/scanner/copier. I'll take a look at it's specifications on the Epson site. I'm restoring old family photos and have been scanning them and doing the restoration in Photoshop CS3. I also need to scan in some old 35mm slides and also some photos that have been ripped into several pieces. If the DX4450 is not a flatbed it may not be suitable. It's nice to know that there are scanners (at least this one) that can be installed on Vista. If I can't find one that works I'm going back to Windows XP.

I have the CX4200 multifunction. Works on Vista 32bit, and 64 bit with no problems. You need to install the drives that are available at Epson. The CX4200 is a flatbed.

Thanks for the information on the CX4200 multifunction.

I did download the latest driver for the Epson Perfection V500 from the Epson site. They did not provide good instructions on the installation of the driver file. I worked with their installation support group and performed every task thay could think of, but still no joy Vista could not load the new driver. It reported it found a driver but there was an error that prevented installation.

Device manager shows the Epson V500 but indicates no driver installed. I'm beginning to think there may be a problem with Vista on my computer.

I'll check the disk for errors, run the System file checker tool and the memory diagnostic tool. I not sure what else to do at this time. if you or anyone else have any suggestions concerning steps I should take please let me know.

The "Canon LiDE 20" works well on Vista x86. If you're using Vista x64, then use the "Canon LiDE 25" or later, as Canon has not relased x64 driver for the LiDE 20.

I have the Canon Pixma MP970 (multi) I have it set up as a network printer (attached to router and it's own IP). Works very well and very happy with it's printing and scanning features...it's not a cheap printer though and if you are into refilling cartriges then the chips might not reset.

I also have an Epson Perfection V500 and it works perfectly with Vista x64 on my machine. I have never had any problems with it and the quality of the scans is great.

I'm glad to hear that the Epson perfection V500 works with Vista. That leads me to believe that there is some problem on my computer that is preventing the driver from loading. The computer is a custom build by a local builder that is Microsoft certified. They have built several for me in the past and all have functioned well.

I'm still trying to determine why I can’t load the latest Vista driver I down loaded from the Epson site for a Perfection V500 scanner. The scanner drivers that came with the scanner load and the scanner runs on an XP system. Tried it out on a friends XP system but no one I know has a Vista system where I could test the Vista driver installation.

I have been running several tests to see if there is a problem in Vista on my computer. So far, the only one that has reported any problem is the System File Checker tool. It reported the following: Windows resource protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some of them. Details are included in the CBS.Log.

I located this log in C:\windows\logs\CBS\CBS.Log. When I click on this log to open it, Notepad displays an access is denied message. This does not appear to be a UAC message. How can I get access to this file? I am the administrator of this computer. If I get access how do I replace or repair the corrupt files.

Any help will be appreciated since I feel like I’m lost in the woods with no map or compass.

My Computer

To get access to the file, right-click on it and go to the Security tab, then add yourself in as a user with Full Control. You should then be able to access it.

I don't know why you can't load the x64 driver. Do you get an error message?

I went to the security tab and I am listed as the administrator with full control but the file won't open.

Window just displays a message the it found a driver but could not install due to an error.
There was no error number assigned. When I go to device manager it shows an Epson scanner under other devices. When I right click on the Epson scanner and then click on properties this message is shown in the Epson scanner properties box:

This device is not configured correctly. (Code 1)

There is no driver selected for the device information set or element.

To reinstall the drivers for this device, click Reinstall Driver.

I spent 2 hours on the phone with Epson support this morning and they could not provided any suggestions.

Just purchased Perfection V500 Can't install scan software. I get an error " Could not copy File" "Check the setup disc then run setup again C:\User\Appdata\Local\Temp\\setup.ini
Is this the erro you got when you tried to install Epson scan drivers?

The error I received was that the driver was found but but could not be installed due to an error. Epson support, in the USA, has not been able to duplicate the failure in there Test Lab and has referred the problem to Japan. You might try downloading the latest drivers from the Epson site. I did that, but the problem still continued. I did get an HP scanner to load in VISTA, but the scan software was not very good and I returned the scanner.

I need a scanner for my photo restoration work and removed VISTA from my new computer and installed XP. I now have a Perfection V500 scanner up and running.

I hope you have more success than I had in getting the scanner to install on VISTA. It will be a cold day in Hades before I go back to VISTA.

I have an Epson DX4400 which is an all in one machine, the scanner works fine in Vista and is a flat bed but I'm not sure about whether it can do slides as I've never tried that.

Across the board, a common complaint with Vista owners is compatibility with hardware. Even with some NEW hardware that claims to be Vista Compatible, problems are not unheard of.
Maybe part of the problem is that there are so many different versions of Vista.
I dunno!

I'm lucky, I guess, that I really don't have to run Vista.
I only run it for testing purposes and not as my Primary OS.
XP fills that spot in my life and my one Epson Photo printer, one AIO and one Epson Scanner all work perfectly.

Over the past 28 years, I've had to work on all brands and models of printers, scanners, plotters and copiers and Epson is by far my favorite of the whole bunch.
I just saw a little Epson AIO at Office Max a few days ago, for only $60.
I almost bought it, just for General Principles. ;)

What I really gets me, in Vista, is all their high level of "Security" that won't let the owner and only user access the things that he/she needs to access to properly run their PC.
UAC is just one little item.....and I summarily shut it OFF when I first set up a new PC with Vista on it. I do that in one second, with a little script.
When you first install or setup Vista on a new PC, there should be ONE button there that says "I want it all!":o (just a personal observation and preference)
That would solve 90% of the problems that people have with Vista.:geek:

I bought the computer....I paid for Vista, , , and for the OS to tell me I don't have permission to do something, ticks me off beyond all reason.

Since the day I first installed Vista Ult. on my PC, I've been fighting for permission to do this or that. There are ways to gain permission for certain files and folders, but it's not an exercise for beginners and it's a real pain in the britches.

I wish some really smart programmer would write a script that would grant all permissions to every part of Vista. They could sell that program and be as rich as B. Gates overnight.;)

Happy Computing!

The Shadow

PS: Just out of box, Vista is just too strange for many users, but with a little tweaking and tuning it can be made to look and act a lot like XP. Then it's a pretty good OS, and actually does certain functions FASTER than XP.

Shadow,

I agree that VISTA is a problem where hardware is concerned. I finally got tired of all the things that did not work and the constant requests for permission. The problem solution was easy, I dumped VISTA and returned to XP SP3 and everything works as expected. I do a lot of photo restoration with Photoshop CS3. I really like the Epson Perfection V500 scanner. Since I had returned the first scanner before the return period expired Epson was kind enough to send me another at no charge for all the trouble I had and the time I expended working with their tier 2 customer service.

Epson has been really good to me. I had two printers here that can print directly on CD's. Both were having a bit of a snit at feeding in the CD's properly.
I called Epson and talked with a nice little gal and the result was that they sent me two brand new printers. One was a $400 printer, but since it was like last years model, they didn't even want it back. I gave it to a friend when I got the replacement.

I still have one of them on the shelf.....I've never hooked it up yet.

I'm still using a CX3200 AIO that I bought, refurbished, several years ago. It works great! I recharge my own carts and reset the little chip on the carts with a resetter I got from ink refill kit, continuous ink system, ink, refillable cartridge, epson refillable cartridges, refillable cartridges

It was cheap to buy and it's been even cheaper to operate.;)

Good Luck to ya!

I never ceases to amaze me how people are quick to dump on Vista because they are too [INSERT COLORFUL EXPLETIVE HERE] to adapt. The way I see it, if you're going to move over to Vista, you've got to go the whole route, with all-new hardware to go with it it.

Imagine, for a second if you will, that you are driving an old 60's VW Beatle, and you want to get a modern Ford or Toyota. What do you think the consequence will be if when you get the new car, you decide that you want to keep the new look, but also have the bone rattling noise of the Beatle to go with it, and you decide you want to kep the old engine?

Can you spell "Seconds from Disaster"??

My point is, if you are going to use a modern operating system such as Vista, you should expect a lot of problems if you are going to use it on old hardware. And if you do decide you don't like it, and want to stick with XP, then you're either a fool for not researching your software and hardware compatibility issues properly and shelling out good money for something you don't like or may not work, or you're experimenting with a pirate copy, in which case you're part of the problem of why modern software cost so damn much.

So if you have a hardware compatibility problem with Vista, then please, don't be so damned quick to blame the OS. Have a look in the mirror and ask yourself - is this my problem for not doing my homework properly, or is there really an issue here?

Somebody said her in a previous post:

I wish some programmer (hacker) would write a script that would grant all permissions to every part of Vista. They could sell that program and be as rich as Ceasar overnight.

If that is what you want, then why did you switch to Vista, when all you had to do was stick with XP?

I've said my piece, and won't respond to anything further, so don't bother trying to flame me for being a Vista "fanboy", or buy attacking my opinion. And next time, please, if someone posts here with a legitamate questions, you should rather try to assist. If you can't do that, then don't post a reply at all, ok?

I DIDN'T choose vista! It chose me....had no idea that I couldn't go back to XP either!
So I'm stuck with a beautiful new laptop and nothing but trouble or buying new hardware...just because of microsoft! GR r r r!

My Computer

My theory is that when life give you lemons.....you make Lemonade!

With a little tweaking and tuning , Vista can be made to look and act a lot like windows XP, in Classic mode. (Windows 98 mode)

In most cases it's foolish to even try to remove Vista from a new Pc and install XP, because there are NO XP drivers being written for most of the new motherboards.
(The ones showing up in store bought PC's.)

If you're building your own system, you can buy motherboards and other hardware that is still XP compatible. But for the user/operator and not the builder, you're kind of stuck with Vista. So why not make the best of it.
I thought that was what this forum was all about, but I guess not.
Boy, am I ever disappointed!
