My E: drive

I have a question, I was wondering if it was possible that a virus/trojan or something else could cause my E: drive (DVD/CD) drive to randomly open? Because at points it will randomly pop open.

Usually I notice this when I pick it up or set it down. I could understand if I accidentally hit the button picking it up but usually when I set it down Im not touching near that area. It has also popped open while on my lap.

Another thing I've noticed is even though I dont have a CD in the driver it will occasionally make the noise as though theres a CD in there. This has been a rather recent problem. I had a friends computer having problems so I did run a antivirus (A squared located under the free products). It did find some problems but said it deleted them. Im just wondering if this is a coincidence or if there is something potentially wrong because I'd like to take care of it over winter break.

I was also wondering do you guys know anything about Driver Detective. you download it at: Driver Detective | Driver Update Software for Windows XP and Vista ?

Feel free to ask question if you need more information about my computer or recent problems.

Hi Marrypoppins,

It sounds like it is just a faulty ROM drive, if it only does it when you move or bump it thats proberly a good incation its got a issue. replace it and see if it does it again.

Dont think i have heard of a virus that can open your CD rom tray when you move the PC.

Sometimes I haven't moved it though it just sitting on my lap, and that's what I find weird. Usually its after picking it up or setting it down, but occasionally its been just when sitting on my lap.

assuming that is the case. How urgent would you consider the problem. If it is a faulty ROM do I really need to get a new one or could I just "learn to deal with it"? Because frankly as a college student I really don't have the time or resources to do it. Plus my knowledge of this stuff is practically non-existent.

Thank you for your help, and opinion/advice. I really appreciate everyone's help! It's nice to know that when I can't figure it out (70% of the time) there is a place I can come and get some good advice.

well if you can put up with it then dont worry to much about it, not sure the cost factor of what it would be to replace.

BTW - if you're a college student, talk to your College's IT staff and see if they have any ideas.

Also, you might try consulting with the manufacturer - if it is a known problem they may offer a replacement for free....
