MSE and Windows Updates

I have read conflicting statements about Microsoft Security Essentials and Windows Update. I know that when you install MSE it changes your Windows Update setting to "install updates automatically." If you change it back to "check for updates but let me choose whether to download and install them" will MSE continue to update itself outside of Windows Update? I have read that it does and have also read that it does not and that you have to manually update it.

Can anybody clarify this for me?

Welcome
Regardless of your settings MSE will install updated without your help. The settings for the other updates are not changed. Talking from personal experience, as I have MSE.
