More updates?

I was kind of hoping this would let up for a while. :huh:

In my previous post

I found out that not all the updates that Windows tells me about actually apply to my computer. The issues are now resolved and I have even downloaded SP1 withouut issues! (Imagine the Snoopy happy dance here)
This morning, 5 more updates appeared. I have my computer set to tell me about them, but not download til I tell it to. I have looked them up on the Microsoft website, but wanted to ask advice before I go ahead and install and put my foot in again... :o
They are:
4 updates for Windows Vista, 3 important, 1 recommended
KB951978-the website says this one is for XP SP3??
KB952709-improves reliability
KB955302-I have seen some posts on other forums describing issues installing this
KB957200-reliabiliy (not much more info than that)
and
KB 940157 Windows Search 4D for vista. Recommended.

I also wanted to say that this forum is great. The knowledge and support here is fantastic.
I can't believe I waited so long to find it. You guys rock! :cool:

That may have been your problem all along. You failed to mention that you didn't have SP1 installed in your previous thread. A lot of problems with updates can be from not having SP1 installed first. There are some updates that need to be installed before installing SP1 to fix issues with the update process and compatibility and also some that need to be installed after having SP1 installed. SP1 has been out since March 2008 I believe. Service Packs are like very important big updates that resolve known issues with previous problems.


As to windows update providing the right updates to your computer...it is in most cases 100% accurate on this. I have never had an update in WU offered to me that didn't apply to my computer.

But I will look at those updates and try to find why you get one for XPsp3.

I am sorry. I should have said that I had SP1 loaded on my machine before this all started. I had downloaded it back in April when it first came through the Automatic Updates. The reason I had to download it again was because I had Factory Image reinstalled and that set my Windows back to before that.
When I reinstalled the first time, the box worked fine till I downloaded updates. I had it set to automatic so I had no idea which one it was. The second was the same issue at the same place after downloading updates.
All I remember was that it was a Vista Update and a bunch of Office Updates.
I am often guilty of not reading the screen before I hit 'next' :o

Since then I have set the updates to look but not download or install and asked about them before installing. I have hidden several that I have been told are problematic (KB955839) or not totally necessary til I have a problem. I do look them up and read the articles, but to tell the truth most of it goes over my head..:sarc:
Any advice would be most appreciated.

KB951978 is for XP Service Pack 3 and Server 2008. I probably wouldn't install it unless someone can convince me I should. It doesn't play well with some AV'
s and can cause internet connection problems (on XP)

KB952709 :- According to Microsoft article on KB952709, the update resolves issues that may affect some Windows Vista SP1-based computers to improve the performance, responsiveness, and reliability of Windows Vista in the following problem scenarios:
  • Improves the stability of Windows Vista SP1-based computers by addressing some crashes that may occur when you try to check e-mail by using a POP3 e-mail client such as Windows Mail or Mozilla Thunderbird. The crashes may occur on a Windows Vista SP1-based computer in the following scenario:
    • Incoming POP3 and outgoing SMTP traffic monitoring is enabled.
    • Both a third-party antivirus application and an antispyware application are installed, such as the following applications:
      • ZoneAlarm Internet Security Suite by Check Point Software Technologies Ltd.
      • SpySweeper by Webroot Software, Inc.
  • Improves the reliability of the Windows Vista SP1 based-computers by addressing some problems that occur when you delete user accounts by using the User Accounts item in Control Panel. When this problem occurs, the system may stop responding (hang).

There is no reason not to install this

KB955302 :- Worth installing. Seem to be issues only if you have installed the beta version of IE8

KB957200 Windows Error Reporting does not function correctly when it is running in a "Windows on Windows 64" (WoW64) configuration on a Windows Vista SP1-based or Windows Server 2008-based computer. WoW64 is a component of 64-bit Windows-based operating systems that enables 32-bit applications to run.

If a user sends information to Microsoft about a specific error by using the Windows Error Reporting interface on a WoW64-based computer that is running Windows Service Pack 1 (SP1) or Windows Server 2008, Microsoft does not receive the information. This information is used to analyze the error. This information could lead to a solution for the specific error that would be posted in the Problem Reports and Solutions item in Control Panel. If you are running Vista x64 install this.

KB 940157 You don't need to install this but it adds new search functionality and seems to have no issues

Airbot.. me neither.. I just wish they'd cut it out. This is the second one I've had to get rid of apart specifically because is wasn't for my system from the ones I don't really need.
I seriously think this is what crashed my system in the first place. Anybody at Microsoft I can contact about this? Should I try?:shock:

Hi peppurr, this is the reason it is NOT a great idea to let your system auto update. Both from Vista and by using so called driver updates programs. Unfortunately software isn't intuitive and sometimes finds it hard to correctly identify your system components. That's why you get problems such as you had recently. Makes a body a bit paranoid, doesn't it? lol
