Money 97 Compatability

Hi All,

Following the slow grinding speed of my old pc, I got myself a brand spanking new system running with Vista.

However, although I can load my MS Money 97 onto the system I cannot load the back up file saved onto my stand alone hard drive.

Are there compatability problems with MS Money and Vista? Has it to do with the fact that MS have now strangely withdrawn MS Money.

As extra info. MS Money on my new system seems to fail to recognise the mnbf extension as being compatable, it seems not to recognise anything other than an mny extension


Please help before I implode!

Get rid of 97 and use the free Sunset. Its the same thing

File extension should be .mbf, not .mnbf. Is that just a typo?

Have you tried File > Restore Backup to convert the backup file without success?

Dear ALL,
Thanks for that, have just downloaded the sunset version - it was going so well, then.......... Sunset will not recognise the back up file as it was made by an earlier version of Money.

Yes it was a typo extension should have read .mbf.

The dog is starting to look worried, it is within kicking range!

Let me look into that. Sunset was suppose to be able to handle old versions.

The Microsoft Money Plus Sunset versions provide an alternative version of Money with the following:

No activation requirement. This version can be installed/reinstalled as needed without a requirement to activate
No online services. Discontinued services include online quotes, bill payment, statement downloads initiated by Money, data sync with MSN Money, etc. If your financial institution provides OFX or QIF statement downloads, the Sunset versions will allow you to import those statements into your Money file
Online Help is replaced with a local Help file
No Assisted Support. Self Help and community support may continue to be available for a few more years
File conversion from older versions of Money. The Sunset versions are able to open and convert Money Plus files and files from older versions of Money (e.g. Money 2006, Money 2007). The Sunset version cannot convert files created by regional (non-US) versions of Money

Slight update. Went into file manager and checked properties of the back up file. I noticed that it was ticked "read only" - I took this tick off. I then noticed that it was set to open with Money 97 - I changed this to the sunset version.

Same result though - says the back up is an old version not recognised by sunset.

I see at the bottom, the sunset doesnt work outside the US, my Money is a Brit version.......... the dog is heading to a place of safety as I write.

Thanks for the link, have downloaded Money and tried running it. It says it is an incompatible version!!!! It may be because I changed the properties on the back up.

My headaches now, I am off to bed to recover now. Will have another bash tomorrow night when I am fresher.

Dear All,

After two days of fruitless attempts to load my back up (.mbf) onto my new Vista system and the kindly suggestions of everyone on the forum, I borrowed a friends laptop running on XP (my old OS) and loaded money onto that.

The problem is not with Vista.

Money loads but refuses to recognise or read it own back up file extension (mbf), only accepting an .mny extension. I have now rebooted my old pc and opened up the money files and tried to backup this time in a .mny format, so I can have another attempt to load the backup. But no, it only saves a back up file in .mbf. Dog is now hiding behind sofa.

My suggestion, is that if you cant save what you have, download the sunset as I first suggested. At least you can have Money from now, going forward

If you can now get to into the file, export/ save it as a .QIF file. You should then be able to use that file in Vista: -
