It appears I just need to replace the following file in the manifest folder:

winsxs\manifests\amd64_microsoft-windows-f..truetype-meiryobold_31bf3856ad364e35_6.0.6002.18130_none_2b3244fd2d424052.manifest

However, I've searched and can't seem to find anywhere to download that file. Anyone know where I can find it?

Thanks!

Hm, I'm afraid that running the SFC command did not help, and I only have Vista on partition. Unfortunately, the earliest repair I can go back to is when I uninstalled SP2 (in an attempt to fix a problem with Windows Movie Maker) which doesn't really help me, as that is when the problem started. I was sort of hoping someone might just be able to post the file or there might be a place to just download the file.

Unfortunatelly I don't have this file on my virtual system (Vista SP1),if you have Vista installation disk without SP or with SP2 you can try find yourself, however very possible missing component belong to any hotfix and identification is very hard to follow
System Update Readiness Tool - CheckSur.log File Analyzis - Windows 7 Forums[2]=General%20Tips

If you don't feel strong to do that yourself.I could identify this file but I need COMPONENTS file from your computer.Download RegBak tool Download RegBak 1.2 Free - Create backups of Windows registry files - Softpedia
this tool will create backup registry file. From backup I need only COMPONENTS file, pack this file to *.rar or *.7z and upload on rapidshare.com

Hello,

If I may, I have some ideas, as I was a big participant w/ Vista x86 when SP2 was released and this very problem (SP2!) was offered free through Support!

Warning in advance, I am very thorough and tend to cover ALL steps and it's always long-winded and very wordy. However, hang in there with me, and hopefully this'll fix your problem. SP2 w/ Vista x86 is a major pain, I know!

You're probably sick of this, but I must recommend running proper scans to verify the obvious before starting: The preferred method my business uses is:

1.) Full (complete, no exceptions/skips) system scan with Avira AntiVir Premium Security Suite.
2.) Download SUPER Antispyware Portable and SAVE it to CD or a USB Flash Drive. (It won't work if saved to local disk. (Right-click, PROPERTIES, then click on "UNBLOCK," then "APPLY," then "OK.") Double-click to run, but please do NOT run as Administrator. Do not manipulate the scan settings. DO, indeed, be sure to check for updates before scanning. They say that each download is the current revision, but I"ve seen many instances of releases/revisions being available post-download.

Do a complete scan.
3.) Download MBAM 1.46; Malwarebyte's Anti-Malware and check for updates (cycle through and restart when told,) until you "Have the latest updates availabe," and have finished a "Full System Scan" with pristine results. Sometimes the smallest registry hijacks can throw off an entire balance, especially if an infection is Virtumonde/Virtumundo/Vundo-related, as it tends to block MSUpdate/WindowsUpdate from functioning or damages its functionality, assuming that's where SP2 is coming from; a missing file is rare, as Vundo is an all-or-nothing form of infection, but stranger things have happened.
4.) After cleaning-up, restarting, etc., download one tiny last file. "Old Timer Tools'" TFC (Temporary File Cleaner. Simple & Effective. Requires restart right after usage, so be ready. Download and save to desktop; download from; http://www.geekstogo.com/forum/files/download/187-tfc-temp-file-cleaner-by-oldtimer/
NOTE: That is not CCleaner or any like program; It's not subjective; it safely ONLY removes temporary files and doesn't kill chkdsk file frag's or anything.

Perhaps you should check and see if you've got all the prequisite hotfixes/security updates (not sure if SUR covers it 100% or not, honestly,) and/or if you need stuff for manually installing "Bootstrapper method" SP2 yourself... If you're up to it, here's the Microsoft Knowledge Base article/site with (towards the middle/bottom area) the download link for the actual service pack itself!

That might be the way to go.

Before I paste it here, I wanted to make sure that, when you're using the System File Checker Utility (sfc /scannow,) that you're Administrator. Truth be told, I don't know if it'll let you if you're not, but that is a requirement for it to be successful. Also, I was told by M.S. support years ago when this first became an issue, (SP2 installation!,) that typing:

cd..

(Just as it is above,) until you get a clear directory in Command Prompt helps. You will also want to purge your Windows Update Cache.

#1 Download and SAVE SP2. How to obtain the latest Windows Vista service pack

#2 Purge WindowsUpdate Cache.

Locate CMD (Command Prompt); Right-click, run as Administrator, type cd.. until you have a clear directory. Type the three commands in order:

net stop wuauserv
net stop bits
net stop cryptsvc

Immediately go to C:\Windows\SoftwareDistribution (and delete ALL folders within it, everything, then immediately purge your recycle bin.) DO NOT DELETE THE SOFTWAREDISTRIBUTION folder itself!

If you are "denied access," simply rinse&repeat the "net stop wuauserv," "net stop bits," "net stop cryptsvc" processes, as these will eventually auto-start again.

Back to SoftwareDistribution until it's cleared-out.

Once clear, go back to CMD.

Type:

net start wuauserv
net start bits
net start cryptsvc

Type:

exit

(Properly executes a "break" from command line interface, not "X"ing out of it.)

Run WindowsUpdate. Opt-in (Click to "get updates for more products.) to MicrosoftUpdate.

Your first scan for updates may be long. It has to verify what you STILL AND ALWAYS HAVE HAD, but simply don't hvae a cache/record of. THIS DOES NOT DELETE UPDATES THEMSELVES!

-------

Now, install SP2!

Good luck.

If my hands didn't hurt so much from typing, I'd be laughing my ass off at the fact that i read the problem and got all vigilant... but didn't bother to read the simple 1-line-part that said "Hey. No worries," thus making my freaking preamble a total non-issue. lol. Perhaps it'll help someone else at some point, so I'll leave it up.
