Missing Downloads

Hi there, this has really been driving me and my mother-in-law crazy for months now. We both have Vista Premium 32bit SP1 based laptops, similar hardware (she has an HP, I have a Compaq, I know they're basically the same), and similar software packages from the factory. I can download and locate everything and anything on my machine, but when we try to obtain the same file from the same mirror on her computer the download vanishes completely.

I have done some side by side testing with different browsers, different save destinations (USB Flash drive, external HD, internal HD), and different file types. The frustrating thing is that I can not for the life of me figure out what the big deal is, as we have the same network settings and security program (AVG 8.0 Free). I have also tried to run from location, and the download says it places the file in the "temporary folder" but never runs or opens. When I check the temporary download folder for IE7 (on her machine) it does not exist. When I check it on my machine for Firefox 3.0.10 and IE8, the file exists and runs/opens all honkey dorey.

HELP, PLEASE!!!!

Thanks :)

Actually, I fixed it myself by doing a system recovery. It was not the desired fix and took about 36 hours to complete, including updates from scratch and removing bloat-ware, but the issue was resolved. I managed to use my external HD to back up all the pertinent data and restore the data once the system DVD was finished.

Honestly, until somebody can figure out why Vista does this, that will be my solution. It aint pretty, but it works.
