If you click "run" the downloaded program will be installed. Nothing is left behind to be found other than the program you just installed. The program is ready to run. If you clicked "save" do you watch to see were what folder the download is going to? They are probably ending up in your DOCUMENTS folder somewhere

hi
many thanks for your reply
i have checked everywhere for the downloaded file and cannot find it.
all i can find is a residue of a file in C temp, when i try to click on one of them it says windows cannot open this file TMP and give you options to try to open via the web.
i have tried this to no evail.
if i click run the download starts when download finished it goes to the verification bit and then its gone, no auto start or installation begins.
i have tried saving to a folder and desktop, it says its downloading to that destination but after download and verification process is complete you get the copying files box, when thats completed i check the desktop or folder and nothing to be found.
any ideas?
many thanks
carl

Are you using a browser for downloading ? If so, you can go into the options and tell it where to place the file. Like C:\users\username\downloads\

I remember that if you don't set a location, for some browsers, it can wind up on your desktop.

hi
thanks for your reply
yes i do use a web browser was internet explorer 7 now upgraded to 8
i have tried choosing a destination for the download even created a folder and directed the download to there, but when download complete folder is empty and nothing on the desktop.
i am using AVG 8.5 network edition
i thought that maybe i had a corrupt installation so i uninstalled AVG and reinstalled it strait away, it downloaded and instantly went into the setup, could it be anthing to do with AVG blocking my downloads?
any help or advice is greatly appreciated and thanks for your time

You could try resetting Internet Explorer to default settings. You can try 2 options, 1 is Restore Advanced Settings which will change back to default settings. The other is Reset... which will completely reset Internet explorer & any addons you have installed. If you run the second you will need to re-download/re-enable your addons (Flash, Java etc.).

Hope this helps :)

Hey guys, I had this problem as well on my mother-in-law's machine and it drove us nuts for months, but I came up with the solution! I fixed it myself by doing a system recovery. It was not the desired fix and took about 36 hours to complete, including updates from scratch and removing bloat-ware, but the issue was resolved and the computer runs blazingly fast just like it should with no issues whatsoever. I managed to use my external HD to back up all the pertinent data and restore the data once the system DVD was finished.

Honestly, until somebody can figure out why Vista does this, that will be my solution. It aint pretty, but it works guaranteed!

other than removing all the bloat-ware, the only mods I've done is increase the RAM from 1Gb to 3Gb
I did the system restore thing but It was too late. it only lets me go back about a week or less and this problem is much older. the bloat ware was the first thing i removed from my pc. it's just barebones vista plus a couple programs that I use.
is there a way to run windows setup.exe? on my old win98 pc I found the setup install program and I would run that once in a while and it would always add speed. I have had this laptop for a little over a year and use it everyday. it is deffinitly slowing down. I've beeen concidering wiping the hard drive and installing vista again but I dont have the disk, The os was on it when I bought it.
