I have a desktop computer. Windows Vista Business Pro 2007 (6.0). 18 months ago, a friend from church who builds and fixes computers on the side; put the Vista OS in this tower by Centurion. I have never been inside a pc so do not know anything about the inside. It has: 2 gig RAM, DVD/CD-Rom drive: Memorez DVD16+/-DL4RWnD2ATA Device; IED Channel, VIA Bus Master IDE Controller - 0571; Vinyl AC'97 Codec Combo Driver (WMD); Mainboard-MSI PT 880 Neo-FSR (Ms-7043); Chipset: VIA PT880. I have contacted the VIA company with no replies about the soundcard. I have tried both a desktop and headset w/mic and neither works.

Someone told me it is hard to get a microphone to work with Vista. Another said the guy put a new OS onto old hardware. I am on SS, so cannot afford another pc. Do I need a new soundcard, or try a usb mic? PLease advise. I have gone into sound in control panel and unmuted the mic. It says in there Line-in not available. Jack not available. Yet, mic is working. What does this mean? Thanks.

Im sorry songbird, Im confused. Is the mic working or not? If not you probably only needs a driver.

Can you go to start>search> type device manager> look for audio device. Is it listed there? does it have a yellow triangle on top? is there any "unknown devices" that have a yellow triangle on them?

No, the mic doesn't work. Even though there is a green check mark under sound for the mic. I typed device manager from start-search and device manager was in the list, as was soundcard. No audio device was listed, however. I went into device manager, and under sound and media, my sound card is listed, but no yellow triangles are there.

What is the snipping tool? I have only been on a computer since 2003 and have learned by myself here. Thanks.

songbird the snipping tool is a built in screen grabber that you can use to take a screenshot of your screen for upload to us.

you get to it by going to start>search>type snipping tool

thats it

hope this helps

I did the snipping tool and took two shots and saved them in My Pictures. Then, they were not found! Guess will try again. I looked evereywhere and even did a search.

In order to upload the snips you need to use the attachment icon (shaped like a paperclip) in the reply form

Hi,

I'm having a similar problem. My headphones work fine, but the mic isn't picking up any sound. I'm on Vista Home Premium 64bit, with an SB Audigy. In the 'Sound' box, my mic has a green tick and is apparently 'working'.

Help!

I know how to add an attachment. I did the snipping tool, saved and named both shots, and put them in my pictures folder. They are not there or anywhere on here even searched C drive! That is what I am saying. I can't get it to work. Sorry.
