Memtest Question

Hi All,
First time member/poster.

Just finished building my first rig. I would like to check the memory for errors BEFORE I load/install Windows Vista Home Premium x64 to avoid install hang-ups. Can you make an ISO CD of this program, load it in your CD/DVD drive and check your memory for errors? I recently updated the BIOS on the board (DP35DP) and it does show all of the 4GB of Kingston ValueRam PC800 1.8v (2x2gb) installed. I have good reason to believe that it's from a respectable manufacturer. Just want to make sure the memory is good before I load up the OS.

Welcome to the forums!

If this is the product you are talking about, then yes they are reputable.
You can boot into a CD to check your RAM, I use it myself.
It would be best to let it run through 3 or 4 passes to be sure, overnight would be best.

Best to test each module one at a time. Do a full test. The CD ISO is the best way of running it.

I tried about 4 burns of the .iso and it would never boot (BIOS problem?), so I finally had to hook up an old floppy to get it running, but then it worked great.

Like SCSI said, try 'em one at a time, and then both together.

Burn the ISO at 1x-4x no faster. You can use Nero's burn image to do it.

Why exactly does he need to download or burn the CD when Memtest is included with Vista already?

Memtest86 ISO CD loads with less of a foot print than Windows. You get a more accurate test with it.

For burning ISOs I *highly* recommend ISO Recorder v3 - it is quick, simple, and works like a charm. It is very lightweight on resources, and can both make ISOs from discs as well as burn ISOs to discs.

I am currently using the 64bit version, but all last year and the year before I used the 32 bit version on Vista Ultimate 32bit without any problems.

Thanks SCSI for your "each stick individually" suggestion. Both came out with 0 errors and the 2 sticks together went through 6 passes without a hitch. Now I can load up Vista x64 feeling a little better. Really nice forum...Thanks to all !!
