Memory Usage Soaring...

Just to ask...

Is 2GB RAM enough for Vista? HP and Dell say it is. Then why does my memory usage soar above 50% even when my laptop is idle? I usually have these processes running: Skype, Windows Live Messenger, Yahoo Messenger, uTorrent, ZoneAlarm Internet Security, and Edison. Please help! With this problem, I can't make virtual machines with more than 512MB of memory.

System manufaturers will say anything to ease your mind. In truth, Vista loves lots of memory.

If you're using a 32-Bit version of Vista, then you can realistically intall 4GB max memory, of which you may limited to only 3 or 3.5 GB because of hardware.

If your machine can handle 4GB or more ram, then you'll want to change over to Vista x64.

As far as Virtual PC is concerned, you are limited by design to only a small part of the physical RAM you have installed. I'm not certain what those limits are, but this is why because you have 2GB installed memory, you can only allocate up to 512MB for a Virtual PC. If you install more ram to you pc, then you should be able to allocate more memory to virtual pcs.

Well, I can't do anything about my situation no matter what you say. My laptop is a Dell Inspiron 640m, which is LIMITED to 2GB of memory. Even though it is designed for Windows XP and Vista, the PC uses a lot of memory no matter what.

Oh, and on the Virtual Machine side, yes I have made VMs with 1GB of memory on my laptop, and it works. It's just that even with nothing except VMware running, a VM with 1GB of memory on my laptop takes up 90+% of my host memory.

Keep in mind that Vista manages/uses memory way differently than previous ver. of Windows and normally is not a cause for alarm....
It will use what is available which is actually more efficient than in versions past...
