memory latency and timing

I thinking of splurging and upgrading my memory for my HP pavilion media center m8300f desktop. Max it out sort of speaking but before I do can some one please explain to me what the cast latency and timings are in memory and what do they mean. Or some sites that would explain it to me. Thanks all.
