Hi all,

My first post and i need help.

I have recently bought a new laptop with vista home basic installed. I have transferred all my files from my previous xp desktop. Everything is ok apart from a couple of video files which will not play and a window appears stating an audio codec is needed. I have tried to download a codec but it makes no difference.

Any advice would be good but i have to admit i am very much a novice to this I.T. malarky so if you could explain it like you would to a 5 year old i would really appreciate it.

Cheers for now.

If what barman58 says does not help, you can try something different. (to be honest, I am not a fan of codec packs, as they tend to install a whole lot of things at once, and I'm kind of neurotic and I want full knowledge and control of what is on my computer)

You can try installing VLC from videolan.org
It's a mediaplayer, so I am not sure you will want to do it. You can use it instead of windows media player. You will not need to install codecs. I've never had any problems with it, and I have never had any kind of video file it will not play.

The other option is that you download a utility called GSpot. you can do so here: GSpot Codec Information Appliance Run the file, then drag and drop the media file you cannot play into it. The utility will tell you exactly which codecs you need to play this file correctly. With that information you can then look for the correct codec on the internet.

Now, this is all in case you do not want to install a codec pack....cos to be honest, what barman told you will most likely work a treat....

Thanks barman for your advice & day 24 for replying. The video file now works great.

No doubt i will be back here to seek further advice. I really am a numpty with all things I.T.
