McAfee SystemGuard Problem

I keep receiving a message in Vista Ultimate 32bit that says "McAfee Personal Firewall Service has stopped working" The problem is listed as "APPCRASH" and the application is listed as MPFsrv.exe. Sometimes I also get a message that says SystemGuard has stopped working. I have had McAfee Total Protection installed on my computer for about half a year already without any problems and this problem appeared suddenly last week. I talked to the McAfee customer support and they told me to download a patch, which I did. However, this didn't fix anything. I have tried reinstalling McAfee (using the special program that removes all remnants of the program that remain after you do a regular uninstall), but the problem persists. I have changed nothing on my computer recently.
I also have the same McAfee program installed on my other computer, which has XP, but the problem does not appear there. Is anybody else getting this problem?

I would get rid of MacAfee. It is crap. Stay away from Symantec for same reason. Avast is decent anti-virus software. I use just Windows firewall and MAC filtering on my router.

Actually I would stay away from both McAfee and Avast as both have failed recent Vista sp1 antivirus testing.
