Major Computer Crash

I saw my laptop lying around so I logged off of it and shut down. An hour later when I want to use it, it goes to startup repair. Thinking that I had shut down incorrectly, I restart the computer but it still goes to startup repair. I try a system restore but it says no restore points have been set. I decide to use ckdsk to check the hard drive for any errors. Halfway through, the computer freezes and stays that way for 30 mins. I turn it off via the power button. But when I restart this time, startup repair is unavailable. Desprate I try to do a complete system restore. It gives me the error code 100a and restarts doing this cycle over and over again. I am afraid that I might not be able to access my laptop at all any more. Please Help!

See if the "Last Know Good ... " option will help, have a look at the tutorial at the link below; be sure to post back to keep us informed.

I've tried every single type of startup I know including Last Known Good Startup Configuration but it always redirects to system recovery which in turn gives me the error code. I am desprerate here. I am definetly not prepared to buy a new laptop

Can you list your system specs, thanks.
The error code 100a is associated with HDD failure, and or HDD partition problems.
You may be able to get recovery disks from the manufacturer, if you let us know what make and model we can give you more information.
Post your specs and we will see what we can do.

Try booting a free partition manager and see what it says about the drive:

When I "explore the partition" it shows me a clean version of windows vista without any of my documents. I am willing to do anything to restore it to usable condition. I dont think I will be able to recover any of the documents

Is there a "Users" directory - if so, expand Users>YourUserName to see if your docs are there.

If your documents are there, copy any really important stuff off using the bootable

FREE Paragon Rescue Kit Express

Boot the disc, select Normal Mode>File Transfer Wizard.

You could then try running the boot corrector functions - see if that helps.

After that, on Partition Wizard boot disc, there are check file system and surface test functions.

The Users directory is completely empty so I guess all of my files are lost. I talked to an HP representative and it turns out I need a new hard drive. Luckily I had 9 days left in the warranty so they sent me one free of charge.

If you have lost anything really important, download, install and run Recuva: Recuva - Undelete, Unerase, File and Disk Recovery - Free Download however, I think your chance of success is very small.

Nope it didn't work but now that I have a new hard drive all I need is an installation disk. Thanks for all of your help guys I have learned a valuable lesson.
