I'm confused. The screen shot is for the F: drive. Since it is EOS, it leads me to believe that's a card reader or a USB port you have a camera connected to. Whatever you have connected to it contains pictures. Could you explain?

If you're external drive specified as the G: drive is a hard drive, then I don't think that Autoplay will display at all. You'ld have to open Windows Explorer to see it.

hello wither

the screen shot that i have attached is only an example of what i have lost, you are right about it being a screen shot of my F drive.
My G drive is an EXTERNAL drive and when i open this drive it used to open
with the autoplay menu but this is not happening now. Can you tell me why.

regards calmat

My Computer

Yes, but what kind of drive is it? Is it a optical drive such as cd or dvd or a media device such as a card reader? Those are basically what autoplay will work with.

What do you mean when you say you "open" the drive. Do you mean in Windows Explorer?

I'm wondering if it's got something to do with Autorun which has been disabled in Vista and Win 7 except for optical drives.

Hi calmat and welcome back to the forums

Can you do this to show hidden files:

Show hidden files

Then go to your G drive, you should see a file called autorun.inf. Double click on it to open it. Copy and paste its contents into your next post please :)

Personally, I think that what used to come up is Windows Explorer (WE) because there's no reason for Autoplay to come up for an external hard drive. For instance, I just connected my cell phone to a USB port and Vista said it was installing the driver and then reported that it was finished. Neither WE nor Autoplay came up. I think that WE didn't come up because of what I said about Autorun. When I opened WE, the cell phone connection was shown as a drive. It's interesting because the only thing on my cell phone memory card is photographs. Perhaps if AutoRun was enabled, AutoPlay would have opened.

Of course, I could be wrong.

The autoplay usually come only on when you attach a device - sometimes also at start for sticks.

Hi calmat,

Okay, well let's try making one and seeing if it makes any change:

Batch File

  1. Go to Start > Run to bring up the run box
  2. In the box, type notepad.exe and press OK to open Notepad
  3. Copy (Ctrl+C) all of the text in the following box and paste (Ctrl+V) it into Notepad

    Code:
    @echo off

    if exist G:\autorun.inf GOTO file
if not exist G:\autorun.inf GOTO nofile

    :file
    attrib -r -s -h G:\autorun.inf
    copy G:\autorun.inf G:\autorun.txt
    GOTO:nofile

    :nofile
    echo [autorun] > G:\autorun.inf
    echo label=Test >> G:\autorun.inf

    notepad.exe G:\autorun.inf
  4. Go to File > Save As... and save it to your Desktop named peek.bat. Make sure you change the Save as type to All Files (*.*)
  5. Locate peek.bat on your Desktop and double-click on it to run this script
  6. Upon completion, it will open a notepad window. Please copy and paste all of the text in this file into your next post

Hi calmat,

That's great :) It seems to have worked. That made an autorun file in your G drive. Can you please unplug your drive then plug it back in and check whether the menu has returned?

hello tom

I am sorry, but it has not returned.
when i opened my external drive the autorun file was there, when i right clicked
on this file it says INSTALL, is this what i should do next.
if this file does not work, do i hide them or delete them.

As I mentioned, Autorun capabilities have been disabled in Vista and Win 7 through updates. There may be a way to get around it but I would think you would have to remove whatever update disabled it. Just my thoughts.
