Local network access only - no internet

Howdy all,

Sorry for the long post, but I wanted to accurately describe my problem and my actions. Thanks for your help in advance.

I have searched many forums and tried many fixes, but none seem to do any good. Nobody's problem description is exactly like mine, so I thought I would post my problem.

I have a Sony Vaio laptop on a home network that uses a Netgear WGR 614v6 router with the latest firmware installed. This laptop has had network and internet access for almost 2 years with no problems... that is until mid June.

I have other computers connected to this network and have no trouble connecting to the network and internet. One is a desktop that is wired (XP), one laptop that is wireless (XP), and 3 other devices that connect wireless as well (2 itouches and a Wii).

I have tried rebooting the sony laptop, resetting the winsock, releasing and renewing the IP addresses, rebooting the router and modem, disabling TCP/Ipv6, and uninstalling Bonjour. Clicking on the red X has not resolved the problem or offered any helpful suggestions, and I have not had any known changes by my service provider. I have also tried disabling Window's Firewall. I don't have any other firewall installed (and haven't since first getting the laptop), and currently run Grisoft AVG Free. I haven't installed anything new lately except for any automatic updated from Microsoft or AVG. The system does show several updated for June 14th.

The curious thing is that I can still browse the network and access other computer's files. I simply cannot access the internet.

When I plug the laptop into a wired connection I can access the internet just fine.

I have attached a screen shot of the Network and Sharing Center.

Below are the results of ipconfig /all.

My Computer

You wireless connection does not have a default gateway connection configured. If you are trying to use the wireless connection you need to enable DHCP. Look at your wired connection.

My Computer

I tried putting in the Default Gateway, rebooted, and still no luck. I have static IP addresses put in for all my devices because of IP conflicts that happened quite frequently with our other wireless devices (2 iTouches and the Wii). If I go back to automatically having the internet works, but how do I avoid having IP address conflicts?

My Computer

If you have all your devices enabled to automatically get their addresses from the router you should not have any duplicate Ip address problems. If you have devices that absolutely have to have a static Ip address, then set up your router to start giving out addresses at 192.168.10.100 to 192.168.200. That way you can assign a static Ip in the range of 192.168.10.10 through 192.168.10.50.

My Computer

put your curser on the red x and click it should tell you what your problem is.
normally it will say your adapter needs resetting and will do it for you.

Thanks Retirednow,
Your help was very insiteful. I am back up and running, and so far no IP conflicts. Your suggestion for static IP was an excellent idea and I will use it if I need to.
Thanks again,
TexasJeff
